Pros

Perception of working for a top notch company.

Cons

Significant lack of transparency regarding feedback and career progression. Managers can rank you low, and you may never know the truth - there is nothing written that will be shared with you. Energy and efforts not equally rewarded if not tagged a “hi-performer (HiPo)” early in your career. Clear trajectory of paying new younger hires well to lure them in, and then pidgeon-holing them and giving unsatisfactory reviews as they get older - most employees won’t leave because “golden handcuffs” of the pension prospect. Because of meritocracy system, colleagues may back stab and undermine each other to promote themselves. Managers are often cruel and demeaning; have yet to meet one that was a true servant leader and not on an upwardly focused power trip. Learned this the hard way: after more than 20 years with the company, was completely blind-sided with a bad review “NSI” (need significant improvement) after turning 50 years old, despite one of the best years of “unlocking value” to the company. Advice to young prospects: look elsewhere to begin your career and invest your incredible energy and talents; with all of the offshoring of services happening - ExxonMobil is toxic to the environment and to its employees. Look at “The Layoff” and search for more ExxonMobil to learn more from both current and former employees. Run, don’t walk away.

Pros

Great all around compensation - from salary, benefits (401k & pension & flexible work], medical [fantastic] Great people - at the company you understand everyone around is came from being one of the smartest people at their previous job/university. Within IT the overwhelming majority of people really care for you, this feels way more collaborative than competitive. Career Development - lots of opportunities to grow in breadth of experience to get deep in your skills and grow in leadership skills

Cons

Work Politics - being such a large corporation with a lot of history there is a tendency to be work politics/red tape sheerly because of the size of the company. However, it is not really bad if you are willing network , put yourself out there to talk with leaders, and be a normal hard-working enjoyable employee. If you do these two things you will succeed at ExxonMobil.
