Pros

Good starting point for learning about the needs of the construction industry, as well learning a lot about those types of products

Cons

I simply wanted a part-time job in this industry-- perfect, right? Wrong. I came here with 20 years of experience in this industry. I am now reporting to my 3rd GM in two years and am absolutely fed up with doing all the work that these incompetent idiots who get promoted to these positions are too immature and too under-educated to do. I am done 'taking one for the team'...there is no team - it's an upside down pyramid with a big fat layer of lazy overpaid management on dozens of levels, and trickles down to the little part-timer at the bottom, holding up the whole stinking place for crap pay. I have been pushed and pushed to move into outside sales. I am not interested in signing up for THAT goofy program. I guess my standard and expected 2 years with Fastenal is up. In some respects, I am sad to leave, because I love what I do, but I just can't take the business and political structure of this train-wreck anymore.

Pros

I like my coworkers and my GM is a good .

Cons

The business model and lean staffing is simply unsustainable. Entry level pay, part time, little training, no commissions. Fastenal is focused on the sale rather than the customer. The wing it mentatility leaves customer service lacking. It's a roll coaster of putting one fire out after the other. They sale the position during the interview process but after your in there's empty promises with no real timelines for when the advancement is coming. Upper management seems out of touch with the day to day business. If you ask for help they simply say you have a good schedule. It's extremely disappointing that it has turned out this way because I was excited about the prospect of becoming an Account manager.
