Pros

work/life balance, flexibility, working alongside other brilliant minds, learning stipend, decent product, good compensation

Cons

where do I begin. help scout was probably the best company I have ever worked for until my last year there. they over-hired and also put people in leadership that ultimately destroyed the once healthy culture within the team I was a part of. the director changed the way we worked and the expectations for our jobs so drastically that it didn't even feel like I was working for the same company I got hired into by my last year there. I devoted a lot of time and energy into this job because I genuinely loved it. I valued my team mates, my coaches and my VP. I had respect for the work I did there every day. in the end, they discarded me like a dirty rag and cheated me out of benefits that I had earned during my tenure. that was a pretty hard pill to swallow because some of those benefits are milestones that all employees look forward to. HR didn't give me a valid explanation for my termination, nor did they give me a chance to take corrective action. not even a PIP. this experience has made me realize that companies will treat you well until they don't. there was no compassion or empathy for me as a person in the end. everything became legal and formal and they pulled the plug so fast I could barely say goodbye to my team. take your time off, folks. don't stay past your work hours and go spend that time with your family or taking care of yourself. don't give 100% because none of that will matter when they coldly fire you or lay you off. HR is there to protect the company, not its employees. remember that always!

Help Scout Response

It's not easy reading a review like this, and I'm sincerely sorry that your experience at Help Scout felt inconsistent. We have clear processes in place for parting ways with employees that we follow each time, and in all cases, clear feedback has been given well in advance of any action. It's not an easy decision to part ways with an employee or one we take lightly, and any time we're in that scenario, I assure you that a great deal of thoughtfulness and due diligence has happened to make sure it's the right decision. In an effort to help ease the hardship, we also commit to providing generous severance packages to help ease the hardship. As the VP of People, I take your comments seriously, and my door is open if you'd ever like to reach out directly. - Leah

Pros

Honestly, if I could give it 4.5 stars, that would really be my rating. I like it here, but it's definitely not perfect. The people are pretty amazing. They're smart and kind and generally people I'd want to hang out with if we lived in the same place. But we don't, because we're 100% remote. And that's pretty awesome too. People love our product. It's nice to work for a company that people genuinely appreciate. We're definitely customer-focused, which is so much nicer than some of the companies I've worked for where they're just obsessed with the next enterprise deal. The work-life balance is solid here. Lots of parents and people who have lives outside of work. The opportunity for ownership is great. I'm the kind of person that likes to drive my own work and tinker with problems, and I get that here.

Cons

It's messy. I've been here a year and there's definitely a lot of whiplash from strategy changes. At times it's really hard to see where we're actually going, but things have felt a LOT better since the Fall, and I'm genuinely excited for what we're doing right now. There's a lot of turnover. Some teams just feel less stable than others.
