Pros

Union representation; working with wonderful and dedicated people in various fields (faculty, staff, and students alike); non-traditional urban campus; public transit; fantastic benefits (PEBB).

Cons

Portland and the surrounding metro region is rapidly becoming exceedingly unlivable as the housing and cost-of-living crisis continues while wages stagnate; PSU is extremely understaffed, the difference between PSU and comparable public OR universities is dramatic (about 1/3 as many staff comparable to the faculty and student bodies); minimal opportunity for advancement; frustrating administration and management; unreasonable workload expectations.

Pros

It's a really great opportunity to get up and learn to teach your own class rather than just working with a professor as a TA. Really comprehensive and rewarding experience.

Cons

The pay is unlivable unless you're not paying rent. The contract is 15 hours a week, but obviously if you're just starting to teach as a GA, you put in WAY more than 15 hours of work. If you come up against a problem, there is very little oversight or support.
