I worked at First Student part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Enjoy the benefits and incentives company has brought.
Received raises, a huge plus because cost of living goes up.

    Cons

Mechanics took their time get buses working, especially if a location did not have onsite mechanics.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees equally. Follow through if an employee does not follow procedures and polices of the company.

I worked at First Student part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Trainers are very well trained
    - Weekly Pay/Hourly Rate
    - Driving Experience

    Cons

    - Good luck expecting a pay at the end of the week just to not receive it. Under a very slow system, the headquarters of First Student sent out my first check the 3rd week prior to when I was put on payroll

    - Can not support family with part-time pay

    Advice to Management

How dare a manger could get paid at the end of the week and could careless about one of their employees not receiving a check at the end of the week

I worked at First Student part-time

    Pros

Training is provided (if you can find a trainer to work with you).

    Cons

The training requires a full time commitment but you won’t be paid for it unless they hire you after you’re trained. One classmate worked 2 full weeks before they let her go for something on her background that she asked about when she interviewed.

Good luck collecting the alleged sign on bonus. Everyone pretends it’s not their job to issue the check and that the one person who can do that is not there that day. And don’t think it’s a lump sum - if you get it, it’ll be paid out in $250 increments over 6 months.

Once you’re a month or so in, having not been paid a dime, you’ll take your test and get hired. Don’t think about quitting after that though because they own you for at least 90 days. If you quit before that, you’ll lose your CDL because they sponsored it. You don’t have to worry about hours though - turns out there are none in the summer - another thing they forget to tell you.

I have been working at First Student part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The safety staff and trainers are awesome...very knowledgeable. Co-workers are pretty awesome and everybody gets along well enough.

This is the perfect job for retirees, moms who don't have to work to support the household, or full time college students who take most of their classes online.

Free continuing education courses are offered online for employees, but there is no clear discourse regarding how to find them or sign up.

    Cons

You're obligated to work for First Student for 6 months if they help you get your CDL. If you try to leave, they will cancel your CDL. What this amounts to is a commitment from the driver to work a split shift during the week without considering other opportunities for full time employment. You'll earn part time pay for a minimum of six months with First Student.

Money: $15/hr to start, regardless of experience, with 20-25 hours per week. The split schedule doesn't allow for another well paying full time job. There is no flexibility. Not many am only or pm only routes available to allow you to commit to another company. You get paid every 2 weeks, and direct deposit takes two months to go into effect.

Training can take 4-6 weeks, or longer, depending on availability of the trainers and how well things are coordinated. Training pay goes on your 1st check, which can be 2-3 weeks after your first shift as a driver. Plan ahead and go into this job with plenty of money saved and the bills paid.

Advancement opportunities for salaried positions seem to be very limited, and they will hire from outside before promoting a driver.

    Advice to Management

Give new employees their training pay the first day they drive a route. If the trainers are paid 'as you go' for time put in training a driver, then the new driver deserves their training pay, without delay, as well.

Work on building quality relationships with drivers. Promote from within.

Respect honest communication. When a driver says they need a shift off for an appointment, it's because there's an appointment. We're trying to give as much notice as possible. If a driver says their financial needs aren't being met, try to help. Cancelling, or threatening to cancel, their CDL isn't a resourceful way to solve the problem. Find ways to split routes for drivers to work mornings only, or afternoons only, so they can commit to a full time job somewhere else while still working part time here.
