I worked at Follett full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There was a culture of family and there was profit sharing. I guess benefits and oh, free coffee in the morning and if you need ice, you can take some home.

    Cons

Management. Way too many cooks in the kitchen. They are all alpha and do not listen to the employees that actually work on the front lines daily. Standup meetings are useless and the concept of Lean Manufacturing is wasted on this company. No manager cares about working with other departments. The purchasing manager is totally lost and thinks that overseas is the answer to cost savings.

    Advice to Management

Less chiefs, more Indians. They had one manager that was managing two people.

I have been working at Follett full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Not enough opportunity to move from one store to another

    Cons

Pay scale is not equal from store to store based on volume not work responsibility

    Advice to Management

Take suggestions from store teams more often

I worked at Follett full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible working with schedule as requested

    Cons

Very slow moving, part of a dying sector

    Advice to Management

Be up-front with young managers - you will take a significant amount of time before making decisions and will pay below-industry-standard salary

I worked at Follett (Less than a year)

    Pros

Run the business as your own personal store. Gives you great insight on all that it involves to run a store from the staffing aspect, to merchandising, and to running your own account receivables.

    Cons

The company needs to standardize their practices. Management is inexperienced and unorganized. They should hire more people with a retail background and deep understanding in how businesses work. Their training practices should be better adjusted as well.

I worked at Follett (More than a year)

    Pros

Steady employer that is investing heavily in itself. Privately held. Great boss & team - work life balance was the best I ever had. Felt like I was affecting the bottom line every day. Good cross training.

    Cons

Not a lot of room for advancement. Low salaries and raises. Union environment can be difficult to navigate. Hiring process is too lengthy - mine went relatively quickly, but have spoken to many others who have interviewed since then, and found that they were taking months to make hiring decisions.

    Advice to Management

Low salaries are your barrier to getting new to you, experienced employees. Move more quickly in hiring - the best talent won't wait for you.

    Pros

A very stable company that offers job security. Emphasis on teamwork. Profit sharing is a nice perk.

    Cons

Salaries and raises are on the low side.

    Advice to Management

Spend less on giveaways to employees in favor of higher salaries.

    Pros

It is a great place to start out from when you do not have that much experience in the corporate world.

    Cons

    However, it limits you.

    Advice to Management

    Know your employees better

I have been working at Follett part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible scheduling, great people, mostly good experiences, prefer to hire from within. Also, they usually hire temporary workers initially, but if you prove you are an asset to the company they'll keep you, show your diversity & ability to step in.

    Cons

Although pay better than minimum wage, still feel like the compensation could be better. Usually they hire you as a temporary employee.

    Advice to Management

Rewards for those doing a great job would be a great incentive for employees to want to do a better job, and want to stay longer.
