I worked at Follett full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There was a culture of family and there was profit sharing. I guess benefits and oh, free coffee in the morning and if you need ice, you can take some home.

    Cons

Management. Way too many cooks in the kitchen. They are all alpha and do not listen to the employees that actually work on the front lines daily. Standup meetings are useless and the concept of Lean Manufacturing is wasted on this company. No manager cares about working with other departments. The purchasing manager is totally lost and thinks that overseas is the answer to cost savings.

    Advice to Management

Less chiefs, more Indians. They had one manager that was managing two people.

    I worked at Follett full-time

    Pros

Follett allows for advancement and great at giving evaluational feed back to their employees. Great place to work at if you have family, easy to disconnect when you are off.

    Cons

Their is only some room to grow without having to relocate and often times if you do not have a working plan for a promotion it is easy to get stock in one position forever.

    Advice to Management

Management is awesome. However, I feel like sometimes the they are subject to extreme Home Office control.

    Pros

Great People and they have great products, a good company to grow with, would recommend this company to anyone

    Cons

Slow to innovate sales practices and styles, their on-boarding program needs some significant improvement, will need to see if the purchase by Middleby will change the culture

    Advice to Management

You should be sure to keep currently culture that Follett has been carefully growing. When being purchased by another company, there is significant danger of your culture being effected.

    I worked at Follett full-time

    Pros

Follett has some very good people working for them, but I feel the company is heading in the wrong direction overall.

    Cons

Follett has some highly uneducated managers and VP's in place. The managers do not promote growth for their people. They are more concerned about themselves than their teams.

    Advice to Management

Hire people that have at a minimum a Bachelor's degree. They will not feel as threatened by those that work for them that have a Bachelor's or MBA. In today's corporate world, VP's should have at a minimum Bachelor's degree, but I feel they should have an MBA. Education is highly imperative for manager's and above.

I have been working at Follett full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Everyone is really cool, laid back, friendly and helpful. Great work life balance. everyone seems to stick to the 40 workweek. Most people don't burn the midnight oil.

    Cons

No movement in career. Very cautious of new ideas and new approaches.

    Advice to Management

Build team and empower them to make decisions

I worked at Follett (Less than a year)

    Pros

Run the business as your own personal store. Gives you great insight on all that it involves to run a store from the staffing aspect, to merchandising, and to running your own account receivables.

    Cons

The company needs to standardize their practices. Management is inexperienced and unorganized. They should hire more people with a retail background and deep understanding in how businesses work. Their training practices should be better adjusted as well.
