Great people and mission, but poor management can limit growth

Pros

Working at Foodsteps has been a valuable learning experience. The team is full of extremely intelligent, capable, and genuinely passionate people who are committed to making a positive impact in sustainability and food systems. The company culture is supportive and collaborative, which makes it a genuinely nice place to work.

Cons

That said, career progression can be very challenging due to inexperienced management and inefficient working practices. While everyone is motivated and talented, these issues often prevent the team from fully realising its potential.

Pros

- Work with a product that has the potential to be industry leading - Generally good salaries for sustainability - Staff are generally lovely people and extremely intelligent. - Nice office space in Whitechapel - If you are self motivated, you can learn a lot about sustainability and tech. - Recent acquisition by Registrar Corp means that the need to go through funding rounds etc is no longer there. - Overall I am glad I worked at Foodsteps, because of the people, and because it taught me I could get my head around highly technical and complex material with little guidance.

Cons

- Foodsteps offers limited guidance but expects incredibly high standards, without exception. This creates a constant high stress and anxiety, and the feeling that you're being set up to fail. This is evidenced in the high number of sick days taken by staff. - Many staff work well over their contracted hours. Most people were in the office past 6pm every day, sometimes much later. - Goalposts moved all the time so you never really felt like you had succeeded. - There is a lack of recognition for work in certain teams, leaving team members feeling undervalued and unappreciated. - There is no HR structure (normal in startups, but people do need to feel they can grow). Because of the constantly shifting priorities, it's very hard to know what opportunities you might have for progression. Managers ask how you would like to develop your role, but then tell you that what you've suggested is out of reach for you/not a business priority. This is very demotivating. - Extremely technical product which those with no technical background are expected to understand with no training. Lots of time given at team events to discussing technical elements of the platform, which should be useful but was pretty inaccessible to anyone without a data analysis background, so a bit of a waste of time. - Team members generally from very academic backgrounds, and lack of consideration given to how this might affect the team dynamic for those who have had different experiences.
