I have been working at Formulatrix full-time

    Pros

    -Very interesting, cutting edge products.
-CEO is technically VERY strong. Solid leader and very good at maintaining focus. Does not look for cookie cutter solutions- looks to do things better, cheaper, faster.
-You work hard (and learn a lot) and participate in a profit sharing plan
    - Very healthy business.

    Cons

Not generous in terms of benefits.
    No free soda.

I have been working at Formulatrix full-time

    Pros

    - Innovative products
    - Good environment to learn, especially for engineers
    - Excellent management
    - Collaborative culture
    - Flexible hours
    - Option to work from home
    - Bonus for completing goals & profit share

    Cons

    - Could be more generous in terms of benefits (no maternity leave, no sick days, no personal days)
    - 50+ h work week
    - Tight budget

    Pros

If you want a technically challenging job with lots of opportunities for personal growth, this place is for you. Goals are very aggressive but they do push the company forwards and (ideally) make you want to learn more. Great mission of helping medicine R&D. There are career opportunities as we often have new projects where some amount of leadership is needed. Global teams, you'll be working quickly with our teams in asia.

    Cons

Goals are aggressive which can also man that you end up spending more time at work than expected. That's why you have to buy into the mission of what we do to make the best of it.

During the R&D phase we sometimes look for cost cutting opportunities a little too early on. Could be better to do that optiimization later but management feels that this forces a good design early on.

    I worked at Formulatrix full-time

    Pros

Smaller company enabled a tremendous amount of skills growth. Formulatrix continuously develops cutting edge biotechnology and software.

    Cons

The various hardware, firmware, and software developers working all together requires a larger space. Thus, the office location is not ideal for those developers looking to work on software-only in someplace like Kendall Square.

"A company where they want to work you extra hard but not share the up side"

    Disapproves of CEO

    I worked at Formulatrix full-time

    Pros

    Good technology development
Focused on the customer and product
    Lot of innovation

    Cons

Founders want you to work extra hard but with their phantom (fake) stock options they really don't want to share anything or any up side
Very micromanaged and tightly controlled by the husband and wife who are very mean

    Advice to Management

Stop saying "employee owned" because as your lawyers have said many times that phantom performance options are not stock in the company meaning nobody other than you actually "owns" anything.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Strong technology and responsive to customer needs. Good environment for mechanical engineers. Good product lineup for very specific applications. Friendly, hard working environment.

    Cons

Closely held and controlled by owners. All decisions must be agreed upon and approved by owners. A lot of micro-management.

    Advice to Management

Do not micro-manage. Trust employees to use their best judgement and allow them to try new ideas. Occasional failure will be exceeded by much success.

I worked at Formulatrix full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good product, strong customer following especially in crystallography and liquid handling. Product price point is good in comparison to competition. This company values customer satisfaction and provides good support. Surprisingly they've captured >60% crystallography market share in less than 10 years and is now poised to do the same in liquid handling. Open door policy with management, no company bureaucracy. Place to be creative and write processes as company grows.

    Cons

Growing pains as one would expect. Long working hours.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the passion for quality product.
