I worked at GHD full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Entry level job no experience needed, company training, growth potential, good management, some travel, friendly coworkers, 401k and health plan

    Cons

Not really to many cons other than lower starting pay but that is to be expected in an entry level job

I worked at GHD full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some really great, intelligent people in Project Manager positions.

    Cons

Company doesn't really care about you. Just want to make the most money no matter how negatively it may affect the environment. Some really shady people in Principal and Associate positions.

    Advice to Management

Talking negatively behind your employees' back and rewarding a squeaky wheel doesn't make for a good work environment. If you don't want people to continue to quit then be fair and have a moral compass.

I worked at GHD full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

When the U.S. offices were part of Conestoga-Rovers & Associates (CRA), the company was a great place to work! I enjoyed working with the local partners for 6 years.

    Cons

GHD banked heavily on CRA's oil/gas sector client revenue base when the two firms merged in 2015. When petroleum prices tanked in 2016, the "merger made in heaven" rapidly morphed into an all-out acquisition by GHD, and everything fell apart. The place is a sweat-shop geared to bleed junior- and mid-level staff dry. I'd never work there again, even if they begged.

    Advice to Management

Pay your staff what they are worth, and use billing rates that can support that pay. Short-selling projects by cutting your rates is short-sighted.

I have been working at GHD full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    1. Committed to client service and quality.
    2. Competitive pay and benefits.
    3. Family feel in local office.
    4. Privately held company - Employee stock ownership returns good dividends.
    5. Committed to growth and improvement of business.

    Cons

    1. Regular acquisitions has resulted in regular changes in management and processes.
    2. Canadian based management of US business presents challenges.
    3. Although the policy has recently changed, a focus on hours worked set a bad precedent for some.

    Advice to Management

Continue plan to streamline business processes.
Develop technical career paths. People need options other than becoming a principal or associate.
Continue to embrace corporate values of teamwork, respect and integrity.
Scale back burdensome administrative programs (Limit ISO certification and Safety training for staff to whom it provides little value).

I have been working at GHD full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, only pay $48 a month towards health insurance, fantastic 401K, HSA contribution, good safety records

    Cons

-Company's safety policy obviously was not addressed with field workers, so many safety policies and paperwork that it actually makes jobs more unsafe
-Upper management outdated with technology, many principals/shareholders refuse to innovate with technology that is crucial to future success
-Many upper management unfamiliar with field work, went directly into management
-Bonus system is terrible and raises are nil, below standards for industry, expected to work tons of overtime for free
-Expectations for billability are extremely unrealistic, and the emphasis put on billable hours are to the point of unethical. Management bills whatever time they want, and often milks time that is unnecessary due to poor innovation and communication with project staff
-Essentially no guidance for junior staff, you are thrown into the fire and expected to figure it out on your own. When something goes wrong on a job, junior staff is thrown under the bus so management can pat themselves on the back

    Advice to Management

Your managers run the projects, but your field staff and project staff are who make your money. Your upper management needs to get over themselves, and actually teach and help junior staff. Stop throwing regular employees under the bus to cover for management woes

I have been working at GHD full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

GHD provides a diverse range of services to thousands of clients.

    Cons

Limited visibility to strategic goals fostered by fragmented business development.

    Advice to Management

Harmonize the parts and pieces of GHD in order to fully utilize the companies depth of expertise. Knowledge iceberg scenario exists where 20% of knowledge is visible and 80% lies beneath the waves. Expertise becomes increasingly hard to find the deeper you move down the knowledge iceberg. Incentive structure needs realignment with corporate strategy in order to reward value adding employees. Efficiency is antithetical to the billable hours business model. Management should be focused on innovating to reduce billable time and decrease their hourly rates. Agressive expansion into a more diversified client base is needed. Employees lack a feeling of continuity and direction. This confusion is typically expressed as anger.
