I worked at Gerdau full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good Pay, Great benefits and monthly bonuses, safety first. Loved the shift schedule allowed for family time and balance.

    Cons

favortism amongst family and longterm friends. Got to fit in the clique. No rehire policy regardless of qualifications.

    Advice to Management

review and test based upon qualifications and not solely upon peer reviews.

I have been working at Gerdau full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I can't see any pros lately

    Cons

Bad decisions made in Brazil and at the highest levels in the North America business division led to lots of plants closed or sold, people laid off and lost of focus on its vision and mission.
Managers have seen their total compensation shrinking down to 25%, good workers leaving the boat and who remains there is putting much more hours to have things fixed.

    Advice to Management

I think it's too late for any advice. Boat is sinking...

I have been working at Gerdau full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good Pay and good benefits. Most employees will make a good living and be able to support their family in a manner they will enjoy. There are opportunities for advancement in most cases, especially if you have a college education. Safety is a core value of the company, but safety programs are paperwork based not action based.

    Cons

The company is based in Brazil and they believe they have the right way to do everything - they want the rest of the world to do things the Brazilian way. They try to say they are family orientated but the work / life balance will convince you otherwise. There is a lot of micromanaging and a constant turnover of employees because of it. Safety should actually be the number one value, but in reality production rules over everything, even good sense.

    Advice to Management

You need to understand that not every plant can be operated exactly like the others - different products, different cultures and different people need to be treated differently for them to be successful. And when you hire people to do a job let them do it, stop micromanaging every decision.

I worked at Gerdau full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Tons of shop floor knowledge. The people I worked with had several years of experience. The pay was fair, but constantly changing.

The People care for each other and watch out for each other.

    Cons

Management answers to the share holder, passed the majority of rising health care costs on to employees, while still turning a profit. Reduced the overall benefits/bonuses to employees while still turning a profit. Direct Management was in the dark and had to jump through hoops for Corporate.

The corporate structure is entirely to large.

Extremely dangerous environment. 2 people died from industrial accidents during my tenure.

    Limited Opportunities to move up.

    Advice to Management

Focus on securing and maintaining outside customers. Consider increasing inventories during certain times of the year to meet the needs of all customers in order to beat you competitor to the market. Responding to the market need is more important than inventory levels. Lost customers are hard to recover.

I have been working at Gerdau full-time

    Pros

    Good pay. (depending on position)
Good work/life balance (depending on position)
    Great co-workers (depending on location)

    Cons

The steel/construction industry is very old school. I would love some modern thoughts on business incorporated into our industry.

I worked at Gerdau full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pay is okay for the area

    Cons

Tell you, the shift will be 4 on 4 off. Yeah.. for the first week as a newbie. After that. 12 hour shifts 6 days a week. Most of the workers there are too incompetent to realize that they are working twice in one day and the company is getting over on them on the hours. Need to work 48 hours for OT to kick in . Grinding metal flaws all day/night. Co-workers using compressed air to blow cigarette ashes and metal dust around as they smoke 8 feet from a OSHA approved POL cabinet. Yeah...I'm ex military. No air filtration system. Cancer is inevitable. Make sure you have a back up plan. Walk around for a few days as a employee and you will ask yourself, where did I go wrong.

    Advice to Management

Compare actual working man hour to product and adjust schedule accordingly. Your stock is in BK territory. Stock Ticker Symbol GGB
