I have been working at GrantTree full-time for more than a year

    Pros

GrantTree is a wholly managerless environment. Although at first daunting, once you find your feet, this is completely liberating and empowering. Ideas are listened to from every part of the company and you really feel part of a team working towards the greater good. If you're looking for a career where you want to make a genuine difference and have the ability to carve your own path then GrantTree is the place for you.

    Cons

I do not have any negative comments

I have been working at GrantTree full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - You can simply be yourself - Work is completely flexible: you work when you want, where you want - You manage yourself, there are no managers dictating what to do or how to work - Holacracy gives you the framework to take responsibilities, hold others responsible and resolve conflicts - If you want to think big, you can. Entrepreneurial ideas and ways of working are encouraged -Fantastic team

    Cons

    - If you rely on others to motivate you, self-management might feel like a hard slog

I have been working at GrantTree full-time

    Pros

You can make almost whatever you want of your position at GrantTree. In fact, you have a job title to start with, but the internal roles are quite different and you can follow your inclinations. You create your opportunities, which is great, in my opinion. Self-management Total flexibility Accepting and understanding Every team member counts You can go as high as you want

    Cons

Keeping track with everything that happens is not easy Influencing things requires a very active effort Not for everyone (if you need a traditional structure, you will be very disappointed)

    Advice to Management

    There's no management

I have been working at GrantTree

    Pros

    - You see the impact of your work and the choices that you make on behalf of the company - Independent work but you can always seek advice from the team - Flexible and refreshing work environment that cares about the well being of the people that work here - Everyone here is loyal to the companies success (as per our definition of success)

    Cons

Something to be aware of is that you have to be able to advocate for yourself and whatever change that you want to see happen in this company - you always have the support of the team but you need to be the main driver

    Advice to Management

    N/A as there is none

I have been working at GrantTree full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Working at GrantTree is fab. Employees are trusted to work smartly and without oversight. The culture, to which a huge amount of effort is put, is both liberating and supportive without being too over the top. If you're interested in not being managed and working within a progressive environment within fast paced and dynamic team structures then GrantTree is for you. If you require being managed and tightly defined roles...

    Cons

The culture and freedom it gives can lead to a chaotic environment where it isn't always clear who 'owns' a particular situation or problem, but we're getting better at addressing this all the time. Due to the niche nature of the work onward career progression isn't clear, but being in tech/finance routes to VC, consultancy or working in a startup are possible.

    Advice to Management

    We don't have management.

This issue of ownership has been one of the biggest operational challenges in our open culture journey. 2017 is the year we are getting our hands on this one. Watch this space.

I have been working at GrantTree full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

    - The environment is one of learning, collaboration, transparency, trust and respect. - No hierarchy - I have just as much power to make a decision on behalf of the business as the founders do. - Your professional development and future in the business is whatever you make it. Whilst that might be scary for some, I find it very motivating. - A mixed bunch of people, providing different perspectives on business approaches...

    - Self-management can be hard at first. - Transparency can feel unnatural if you've come from a very corporate world, but it's actually easy. Not sure who should read something? Share it publically and get more useful feedback than you expected! - Constant feedback can be hard if you're hearing constructive messages. I prefer the clear expectations, advice and opportunity for honest conversations. - I can't hide...

I have been working at GrantTree full-time

    Pros

    - Ethical business. We're honest and transparent with our service, and since we serve mostly tech startups, there's a lot of job satisfaction in seeing our clients do amazing work and knowing that we have helped contribute to the tech scene. - Empowerment. I know it's cliche to say "be the change you wish to see in the world", but it's mostly true here. We run an advice process that encourages individuals to consult...

    Cons

    - Self-management can be difficult, so can making decisions. Stepping up on controversial topics can mean stepping into land mines of confrontations. - With only literal career progressions, it can feel quite directionless when the work becomes less interesting. It is also less satisfying when there's no manager that regularly acknowledges your good work.

    Advice to Management

Need to figure out how to provide career progressions in a flat structure.

We're working on the topic of career progression all the time. Here's an extract from guest blog post we wrote for Unicorn Hunt that gives more of a flavour: "We really care about personal growth. It’s not an added extra for us. We see that there are opportunities in everything we ...

    I worked at GrantTree full-time

    Pros

GrantTree is unique and special. As an antidote to secrecy, politics, and hierarchy, the company aims to be bold and trial uncommon practices - a flat structure, transparent pay, self-organisation, role swaps, etc. It doesn't always work, but there is a real sense that everyone wants to find that sweet spot, paving way for continuous trial and error. As the team are a business savvy, emotionally articulate bunch, such...

    Cons

As mentioned, GrantTree doesn't always get it right, such is the nature of experimentation. At the point of my departure, GrantTree was striving to be a 'manager-less but leader-full' company. One thing I observed was, in absence of leadership, there were 'manager-full' moments where too many people had influence. With the aim of depoliticising the workplace by removing managers (so there's no room for brown-nosing)...
