Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

    Pros

    * I found the company to have a family atmosphere, in terms of it's employees. They are motivated and dedicated. * The compensation was solid, inline with my admittedly high expectations. * A lot of employee events, including paid gourmet food trucks, and off-sites at places like wineries. * I wasn't there very long (couldn't take the commute), but I felt confident with the business model and the prospects with the company. * H.R. was professional and easy to work with.

    Cons

    * There was some disorganization in the department I worked in (operations). I had to report to the manager, the tech lead, AND the project manager, each with differing priorities. It seemed like other departments were better structured and organized though. * Operations had a not-so-thoroughly researched vision of the direction to go with the infrastructure. Still, there plans weren't far off-base.

    Pros

Lots of room in the office and friendly people. Old systems are high-maintenance but in otherwise working condition. A real product that helps real people. This isn't another AI blockchain marketing customer synergy buzzword salad. Excellent location near restaurants, Caltrain, bike routes, and highways. Free Eat Club twice a week. There's a good chance that you could organize a coup d'état and make yourself and your friends executive staff. The bar is low and it's seriously tempting. I'm not sure that it pays anything but it would look incredible on your resume.

    Cons

The executive staff's mentality is to just barely get by with the minimum amount of effort and investment. Major new projects are being developed offshore and there's a search to find cheap labor for a new office in Utah. I think they're waiting for a buyout that doesn't arrive. Yes, there are big plans. Very big plans! And big customers! OK, not really. The plans are being designed by a mid-level skeleton crew. The implementation is offshore, TBD, or magic. It's possible that some big customers are paying Guardian Analytics just for an appearance of compliance. Senior staff have left or become sedentary and incompetent. The harder you work, the more resistance you encounter. I feel it myself. The original horror of being hired is now just daily mild headache in exchange for a paycheck. I hope I can get out of here before I lose my love for my career. The PTO plan is draconian. People must come to work sick and that makes everyone else sick. It's really hard to hire good people. New hires are being told to post glowing reviews here but it's not working. Fidelity 401K bleeds money to fees.

    Pros

    - great team, people are fun to work with and helpful, really friendly, non-toxic environment - constant opportunities to work on something different, cool tech stack, exposure to a broad array of systems - SRE culture is strong, good communication practiced with Engineering teams - very nice work-life balance, no crazy 60 hour weeks - quarterly company meetings, where all teams including top management come together to discuss team progress and company news - overall good feeling of unity in the workplace! - also free food twice a week, good benefits/PTO

    Cons

    none so far for me

    Pros

    - Fast-paced environment - Work with data scientists and software engineers - Expose to real and critical business problem to solve such as financial crimes - Near Caltrain station

    Cons

    - Financial crimes domain is one the most complex domain to learn and more training is required - If you have not previously been in fraud or money laundering business or cyber- security, the ramp-up can be hard.

The business of the company has good potential, but I cannot see much growth space for me as an engineer

    Pros

Well defined and clearly targeted products Good potential business growth Small team, closely work together Office is well located at mountain view

    Cons

The engineer management tends to do micro managements; When getting feedbacks regarding improving the office environment to make it comfortable, the engineer management did not really tried to let it happen; Technique stack adopted by the team is just quite old plain standard Java stuff
