    Pros

New Store Opening team - interview process was great to meet all new colleagues before starting the job. Lucky enough to be part of the refurbishment team visiting different stores around the UK, whilst meeting other colleagues working from different stores. Area Manager was amazing and always pushed to receive great opportunities for staff. Never was a dull day - as long as you are happy to talk and get to know new... customers!

I have been working at HobbyCraft part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Unlike typical retail jobs, you do get the opportunities to do demo's and workshops. A focus of the hiring process is seeing your own creativity and finding staff members who will fit with their existing team. Management do offer opportunities for training in specialised crafts or moving to the company base. In my time I have seen three fellow staff members move to the company office.

    Cons

It is still a retail job, there are the typical cons of dealing with difficult customers. Also being more of a specialised store, your knowledge is expected to be of a professional quality by the customers which is asking quite a lot.

    Advice to Management

My advice to management is to make sure that all staff are properly trained. It isn't uncommon for new staff members to be thrown onto the shop floor with little till training and doing demonstrations with no experience.

I worked at HobbyCraft part-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Discount, some friendly collegues.

    Cons

Management were bullies and would speak to you appallingly, lack of training, management would favour some staff over others, staff would be promoted on whether they were friendly with management not how good they were at the job, pressure to get customers signed up to loyalty cards which you were targeted on, doesn't matter if you like crafts, you rarely get to do any. Customers expect you to know about every... product you sell.

Shop managers and assistant managers need training on how to treat staff with respect.

I worked at HobbyCraft part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You do have the opportunity to learn a lot about the products if you are keen to do so and put the time in yourself to develop your knowledge and skills. You're not micromanaged and they do have a lot of trust in you to get on with the job.

    Cons

There was not enough training in customer relations to develop your interpersonal skills and it still shows to this day when you go in the shop and are faced with borderline rude but ultimately very timid and terrified staff who just want to hide at the back and restock shelves. There is not and never has been a friendly vibe form the shop and that comes down to neglecting additional training. Staff were also very... unfriendly to each other, there was not much team support.

    Advice to Management

You hire young and old to keep wages low - that's fine but management please do your part to train them and help them grow!

    I worked at HobbyCraft part-time

    Pros

Friendly colleagues and customers, interesting variety of products, 25% off colleague discount (50% off for two days around Nov/Dec).

    Cons

Average/Low pay. Not much room for job advancement apart from Team Leader of which the pay only increases a small amount. Training procedures are not great. Sometimes shifts change very last minute.

    Advice to Management

More better focus on training up. Higher pay for the longer you work there or a similar incentive.

I have been working at HobbyCraft part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

If craft is your hobby, then this is paradise. Working with others who share a passion for craft is heaven . Talking to customers who craft is fab. Helping people needing inspiration or ideas on how to do projects is satisfying. Colleague discount on craft supplies is an absolute bonus.

    Cons

Some colleagues don't share the craft passion or knowledge and have an unwillingness to learn, to them it's just a job not a complete understanding of a crafter's needs.

    Advice to Management

Manage poor performing colleagues effectively and not be afraid to deal with under performers or those who cause trouble.
