Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

    Pros

    Lots of technologies to work with and gain experience with. Cisco, HP, NetApp, VMWare to name a few. Very relaxed atmosphere when all is going well or not a lot of workload.

    Cons

    No training what so ever. Bad professional culture with a "figure it out mentality" when things in IT should be more standardized and stable. Unrealistic expectations from management at times.

    Pros

    Flexible work hours. No one really keeps track of when you come and go, as long as you get the work done they are relatively satisfied, but rarely will they reward (verbally or financially) for the things you do. In order to get recognized in this company you need to voice what you do or no one will ever notice.

    Cons

    Management is very poor. They do not care about their employees. This reflects in how the employees treat their customers also. There are no rewards here and the salary/pay is very poor. Tech support/Customer Support agents make as much as their programmers/systems administrators (in that they both make little to nothing). They actually make more when you factor in the amount of overtime put in by the latter.

    Install great components and master a data center technician role from a beginners perspective.

    Pros

    Great people, decent atmosphere, lots of different systems. Friendly. If you're looking for experience, and willing to put up with some disorganization, look no further.

    Very disorganized company. Management seems very green.

    The people I worked with directly were great

    Cons

    Deluxe doesn't seem to know their own limits. They acquire new companies and migrate them to their system before they've even finished their last migration, and these migrations always end up with customers losing services or being charged hundreds of dollars by mistake. This means that there is a never ending stream of calls from people who do not understand the web hosting products they were sold because they promote the services to business owners, not developers. In addition to the many first-party brands they have, they also take on hundreds of "partners" which add additional stress to call volume. They will move the goalposts and continue to increase their expectations of agents' metrics. When the agents finally can't keep up, they will lay off the entire department to outsource the jobs overseas, where they do not impose the insane metrics they subject their Canadian employees to. This makes it obvious to me that their goal the entire time was to work us so hard we couldn't keep up so they could hire cheaper employees. They set metrics for "up sales" for us, and insisted we try to sell people products and services that either had no purpose, or simply did not work. They will tell you that there is opportunity for career advancement, but their agents are so over-worked that they can never afford to move anybody away from their position. This is even a problem with senior agents here. I spoke to many senior agents who were supposed to be moving to other positions, but another migration would always inevitably happen, the migration would get botched, and then the senior agents would be needed to handle the influx of supervisor requests and fixing accounts. I could write an essay about how terrible it is to work here.
