I have been working at IHMC full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Following up on the post above, I would like to mention I really appreciate and am impressed with how responsive IHMC management is to its employees' needs. As soon as the need to access a university library was raised with IHMC's management, there has been a series of actions to get all the researchers access to the library system. I appreciate our organization's efforts to make its employees feel valued and cared for!

    Cons

    No complaints right now !

I have been working at IHMC full-time

    Pros

Working at IHMC gives you access to leaders in the fields of artificial intelligence, natural language processing, robotics, and many other disciplines where some of the most exciting research is taking place. The senior staff have important connections and experience to manage large projects, and just as importantly, they're all great mentors that teach younger scientists and engineers how to succeed.

IHMC is also very flexible and understands that different people are productive in different ways. There's no micromanagement here.

    Cons

They expect a lot and work life balance can be difficult, especially around deadlines.

I have been working at IHMC full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

IHMC really puts its research staff and their ideas first. So long as people pursue grant funding and find research sponsors, they can work on pretty much any research topic they want. Work location and hours are flexible too - my office is my laptop. Colleagues are some of the best and most talented I have ever worked with, and everyone seems willing to collaborate across fields.

    Cons

People have to always be on the lookout for funding opportunities, but then that's reality.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. The lack of bureacracy and focus on the overall success of the organization are helpful.

I have been working at IHMC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They have a great atmosphere, provide good benefits, and only hire top-notch people. They are very flexible with regards to leave and working from home. Everyone seems excited to work on their projects and the collaborative spirit is very strong. Plus, outings and dinners (usually with invited speakers) are a nice change of pace from time to time.

    Cons

I don't think Florida is the best area for younger PhDs, as Ocala is rather small without a strong social life, and Pensacola is perhaps better but I work in Natural Language Processing.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work! The staff are very helpful and friendly, and I've never felt like I had to struggle against bureaucracy or deal with archaic systems. Let's keep it that way!

I have been working at IHMC full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great variation and availability of projects, mostly in innovative fields. Flexible work schedule, great work/life balance, time for research and real practice

    Cons

Only average salaries and few career opportunities within the company unless you worked for many year and or you have a PhD.

    Advice to Management

Increase compensation for research associates, provide a sort of path to increase the chances of "stepping up" the employe's career within the company.

I have been working at IHMC full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fun job, great people, flexible work hours, good benefits

    Cons

Pay is a little low for the field and the hours can rack up during crunch time. Positions are contingent on continued project funding which can be a little scary, but it's worth it.

    Advice to Management

    Less junk food

    Pros

    Smart people,
    Friendly & very relaxed environment,
Large financial budgets on most projects,
    Hosts lectures from great people.

    Cons

Upper management occasionally cause many artificial limits on the work,
    Low pay (for some),
Most projects are funded by military,
Has only 1 location that can be quite boring for young people.

    Advice to Management

Remember that without the highly competent employees, the company is nothing.

    Pros

Exciting work every single day. Brilliant people/scientist, that pretend you are as smart as them, therefore making you feel good about yourself and treat you with respect. No employee-employer relationship. I was treated as a Colleague. The work differs from project to project, and there is always something new to read/learn/test/review. Definitely a place for academic growth as well as professional. The whole city knows it as a prestigious place to work and wearing their logo on my shirt, does turn heads. Working for IHMC has always been fun, and challenging. Multiple exciting sci-fi projects are going on, and watching robots come to life is always magical!

    Cons

Pensacola, is a dead beat city, still lot of racism

    Advice to Management

Don't try so hard to mingle with the employees. Be natural
