I have been working at Inova full-time

    Pros

My specific department has a great working environment

    Cons

Getting big things approved is tough- everything has to get approved up the Inova chain, which tends to treat every non-physician position as a nursing position. One-size does not fit all.

I have been working at Inova full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great Benefits
    Push to be the best

    Cons

    Lot of Bureaucracy
Front-line staff gets flexed too much cut cost but Inova keeps building and expanding.

    Advice to Management

Stop cutting your front-line staff-Flex or get rid of some management instead, i.e. one or more of the multiple vice-presidents of this or that, or director of this or that. They are getting paid way more than front-line staff anyway.

I worked at Inova full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good learning environment for new RN grads. Newer hospital buildings are pleasant to work at.
Diverse work force and patient population

    Cons

Little appreciarion to staff RNs, horrible PTO policy (days taken out if shifts being cancelled or must give up pay).

    Advice to Management

INVEST in your staff RNs! Show appreciation with Good benefits rather than giveaway fancy pins/pens/ towels. Also, STOP cateting to abusive patients in the name of patient satisfaction.

I have been working at Inova full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It used to be good working here, but the values got out of wack -- the culture is changing and becoming more dysfunctional.

    Cons

The new priority at Inova for about 4 years now is financial-- workplace efficiency, squeeze the staff, send them home quickly if productivity is at risk, cut the quality of supplies, replace long-serving staff with cheaper help, replace nurses with techs as much as possible, etc.. etc.. There is tremendous pressure to do more with less. The consequences of these policies of money over people: Staff quit, replaced with no one or with techs, or when things get desperate, they are replaced with travelers. So the pursuit of savings ends up being costly. The revolving door continues and the staff is stressed and unhappy. Until people are valued before $'s, the problems will remain. I trace this philosophy to Mark Stauder COO. He needs to go!

    Advice to Management

Value people over $'s. Be the top-paying hospital system in the region instead of the lowest. Be determined to hear your staff and meet their needs on scheduling issues, quality of work environment, manager concerns, etc... Be the best by caring for your staff. They will reward you with the best system, best care, most satisfied staff, least turnover, etc!
