A real letdown

Pros

The personalities at Intercom are generally kind and good natured. Unlimited PTO was a major benefit but benefits began to dwindle starting in 2022.

Cons

Eoghan. The board that booted out one of the most impactful and inspiring female CEOs without warning or real reason. Eoghan is arrogant, rude, demeaning, disrespectful, and so much more. He has a history of sexual harassment that he considers himself blameless for and will berate you should you ever ask about it. He schedules towns halls and all hands and then shows 15-20 mins late without a care in the world. Management and leadership do not understand the product. They will tell you that you did not meet their expectations when, in fact, they never told you what these expectations were that you should be meeting. You are set up to fail. Asking for help will only be used against you. This was the case even when my physician submitted a reasonable accommodations ADA letter.

Pros

- Well engineered product - General sense of attention to detail across company - Good hiring standards, incredible coworkers - Good reputation in tech

Cons

- Controlling, manipulative, and condescending CEO (Hi Eoghan! Can't wait to read your essay reply to this!) - Only just barely started asking for (non-mandatory) manager training - Lots of values get talked about, promised, never acted on - Require employees to do all heavy lifting on diversity and inclusion initiatives - Coworkers feel forced to leave, or leave because circumstances never improve for them. No trust for ICs (mileage may vary on other teams).

While I appreciate the feedback, I'd encourage you or any current employee to come talk to me directly. I don't mind that you have posted your thoughts here, because they sound sincere, but it’s almost impossible to affect change if we can have a dialog. I feel like we are implementing a bunch of new programs that address some of your concerns. It will take some time for them to take root but I am confident that they will have a positive impact.

Pros

There are some really great people at Intercom and some teams doing really great work.

Cons

First and foremost the biggest issue is gender inequality. I regularly witnessed women get talked over or be completely ignored in meetings and left in the shadows of loud, pretentious men who are good at managing up. I consistently noticed that women were rarely present in leadership reviews I took part in. Middle management is inexperienced or non existent in most cases, while leadership micro manages and blocks many projects from shipping on time, if at all. Many late nights of wasted work happen purely based off personal disinterest in the work with no actual constructive feedback. To top it all off there is no real process in place and cross functional communication is terrible. Everyone wants to blame everyone else and is looking for someone to point the finger at rather than working together to solve the problem. If you have a manager that you can be friends with, you’ll be fine, if not you’ll likely get caught up in the chaos, blocked on projects and passed up for growth opportunity. “We are not a perks company” is regularly messaged yet the salary is far below competitors. Offering benefits to your employees isn’t a bad thing and you can do it without going overboard. It doesn’t help that the “unlimited vacation” policy isn’t actually respected and will quickly be held against you if they need a reason to knock on your performance. It’s a shame things have gotten as bad as they have because the product and brand have a lot of potential. But when you only invest in certain people you’re not going to accomplish much in the long term.

Reading this is really hard. I am sorry that this was your personal experience at Intercom. Making sure every employee feels empowered to the best work of their careers is our top priority. For many employees at Intercom I think they would share that they are doing truly impactful work and helping to build something special. That said, like all company's there are areas we can improve. Thanks for the honest feedback.
