    Pros

This job is never boring and offers great benefits plus a great schedule where you work with good people and administrators, wonderful place to live, great quality of life,

    Cons

The pay scale starts low and cost of living raises are infrequent. You do have step raises. You may have to deal with difficult parents and students at times.

I worked at Knox County Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Your experience working at Knox County Schools will depend almost entirely upon which school you work at, especially the culture of the student body (are they inclusive? diverse? tolerant? respectful of authority? willing to learn?) and the culture of the faculty/department/administration (are they supportive? forgiving? political? cliquish?) of that school.

I was fortunate enough to work at a great school within the system, with an inspiring principal who shielded the faculty from the heavy-handed ridiculousness of central office that struck teachers at other schools unabated. My principal gave me opportunities to teach the courses I wanted to teach, to expand beyond teaching into extracurriculars that re-invigorated me, and always had my back in confrontational situations with parents or students (which were rare).

    Cons

Required professional development is repetitive, often useless. Technology is not a solution to all problems.

    Advice to Management

    Always keep the students first.

I have been working at Knox County Schools part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great opportunity to work as much as you prefer to work.

    Cons

The pay increase for Substitute teachers for certain schools should have been for all schools. I realize that there is a higher demand for some schools, but the pay should be the same. Personally, I will go to the schools paying more as opposed to a lower paying school.

I have been working at Knox County Schools full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The hours are very good and there is never any difficulty taking time off for childcare or healthcare. They discourage working extra hours and goals are constructed to be easily attainable.

    Cons

Management is very slow to implement change. The would rather not make waves than make the effort to get awards or recognition. Employees are encouraged to do the bare minimum and not get noticed. There is little to no chance to increase salary beyond fixed scales.

    Advice to Management

The system should be run more like a business and all employees should be held accountable, not with a bogus review system, but by administration that enforces policies and procedures.

I worked at Knox County Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Friendly Staff and Office staff! Cafeteria Staff was excellent and also, the custodial Staff. Average compensation for Degree and experience.

    Cons

Administration, Principal and Asst. Principal had cliques as favs...spies.....Various duties throughout the year in increments of time (everyone).

    Advice to Management

Treat your Staff with the Respect they deserve, because of their Degree Credentials and Professional Licensure (State does not just give out licenses). Experience should be commensurate with Pay. Always have their backs when parent conferences are taking place.

I worked at Knox County Schools full-time

    Pros

The only pros for Knox County are the same for every teacher anywhere. You get to work with awesome kids and have an excellent schedule with holidays, weekends and snow days off.

    Cons

The county is always getting sued and is therefore always coming up with new and ridiculous regulations accompanied by increased paperwork. Their evaluation system is also based on COUNTY WIDE student progress and the county is does not have a good rating so it tends to negatively affect your performance reviews.

    Advice to Management

Start doing what is best for the kids instead of focusing on test scores and evaluations. Find a better super since this one is resigning.
