Pros

It's a grass-roots not-for-profit. I reported to the former COO at the time, I wish that I had stayed on long enough so that I could report to her successor, who was previously a Clinic Director and had amazing people skills. Sadly, she moved on as well. All in all, the clinic managers were really respectful and hungry for assistance from HR. I always felt their support and respect.

Cons

The former COO was a penny-pincher. I was yelled at for putting together a procedures manual for the clinic managers / directors, and using 6 binders. I was told that I needed to be more cost conscious! At the time, did not receive a lot of support from her, and there were employee relations issues every day. A pat on the back, or a genuine, "How are you coping?" would have probably kept me there. As they say, "you don't leave your job, you leave your manager".

Non-profit mired by cronyism

Pros

Population of patients is rewarding to work with. Community of patients is the biggest reason to work there. Clinics are located in good locations

Cons

CMO, Eric Henley, does not support clinicians. Does not do any clinical work himself and focuses on increasing visits and not quality of care. Administrative waste is excessive and the organization rides the backs of clinicians to increase revenue when there is a short fall-- while administrators are sanctimonious about the need for clinicians to sacrifice-- while they do not. Little clinical support, high turnover of staff. Mostly the people that stick around are stuck repaying loans under service obligation or are end of career.

Wonderful place to work--with some caveats

Pros

Right livelihood: bringing health care to people who couldn't afford it otherwise. The workplace culture encourages independent innovation. People are friendly and patient with each other; there's a minimum of toxic politics. As with any organization, the CEO's personality filters down the ranks, and the CEO is smart, dedicated, and modest: he has the corner office, but he doesn't have a dedicated space in the parking lot--there are two set aside for patients, but none for management. Training and employee development are encouraged. At the end of the day, the question is always "How does this help our patients?"

Cons

Growing pains; the organization started out as two clinics and now comprises fifteen, with three more on the way, plus a couple of administrative locations. Planning could be better--a lot better. The same culture that encourages independent innovation encourages anarchy and siloing information. Strategic decisions are made by an executive committee that doesn't communicate well with the people who carry out the work, and sometime grant deadlines override more deliberate planning Salaries could be higher, and there's not much in the way of a retirement plan. If I were a young medical provider with a student loan and a mortgage, I probably couldn't afford to work at LifeLong.
