    I have been working at M Financial Group full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    * Hardworking and dedicated employees are rewarded
    * Great benefits
    * Volunteer opportunities
    * M employees are positive, hardworking, and encouraging of one another
    * Donation matching program
    * Mentor program
    * Managers that I've had experience with support, and foster, a positive work/life balance
    * Great nationwide community of intelligent, kind, and gracious individuals
    * Very supportive CEO
    * M sponsored team sports including volleyball, softball, and kickball
    * Fun company events that build camaraderie
    * Pays for parking

    Cons

    We are currently going through a change in management and an overall company strategy overhaul, and with that certainly comes some growing pains.

    Advice to Management

    There are easy and small ways to incentivize current hardworking employees (utilize open offices, half-day Fridays in summer, etc.). Think outside the box!

    Pros

    Pearl District location, office space

    Cons

    Toxic culture, dated business model

    Advice to Management

    Get new senior management.

    Your arrogance, appalling treatment of employees and culture of secrecy has caught up with you.

    You are not innovative like you proclaim - just look at your results.
    You do not value employees like you advertise - just look at your turnover.

    This company is past it's prime and struggling to keep up with changes in the market and workforce.

    The Board should clean house and bring in a new senior management team - not just a new CEO.

    I have been working at M Financial Group full-time

    Pros

    - M is very well respected in the industry - the company, the employees, and the producers/firms they represent.
    - M has a long track record of profitability and success, and is well positioned for future success.
    - Base compensation is reasonable, benefits are excellent, and the company shares the profits with the employees through a bonus system. The bonus system needs improvement, but it does have strong potential.
    - The environment is very professional, but also comfortable. Casual attire is often permitted, a well-stocked coffee bar is provided, and the company has numerous activities and events such as holiday celebrations, Ted talks, wellness activities, and charitable service opportunities that help bring fun, team building, and a deeper purpose to the workplace.
    - There are a lot of people at M who are incredibly bright, talented, and decent.
    - There is a renewed focus on culture, compensation, management, transparency, innovation, disruption and growth. While it is regrettable that this renewed focus did not come sooner, it is a welcome (and I believe genuine) change from the complacency that I would say M has been guilty of in recent years.
    - While upward mobility is limited in a company of this size, there are many great positions and opportunities to create a great career

    Cons

    - M is going through some challenging times and has experienced an unusual amount of turnover and turmoil in the last 1-2 years. Outside factors, such as political, economic, technology and cultural changes have played a secondary role to internal challenges. While there are some fantastic people at all levels of the company, Sr. Management has struggled with their leadership role in recent years, and allowed some problems to fester, grow, and multiply. While many in the staff have worked through these challenges with patience, optimism, and hard work, some have been infected with complacency, attitudes of entitlement, or a bad attitude. M has been working to address these challenges with new policies, changes in management and organizational structure, development and communication of a new strategic plan, and more changes to come. Change at M can be slow though, despite the best of intentions.
    - The company's bonus program is driven too much by company performance and not enough by individual performance. Underachievers and high achievers are not proportionally rewarded. Thankfully, M is reviewing both compensation and performance management, and appears to be making good progress in addressing these concerns in order to make sure we can better recruit and retain the best of the best.
    - Slow to adapt to remote work opportunities, flexible scheduling, and similar employee-friendly practices that are becoming commonplace elsewhere in our industry and in other industries.

    Advice to Management

    M is a great place to work and has a very bright future, but like every company - we have some things we need to work on. Sr. management needs to continue to make positive changes in policy, communication, and transparency, and needs to expedite those changes to the extent possible. They should also consider additional changes to the sr. management team. Continued positive change will require staff and leadership working side by side, with employees empowered and incented. This requires leadership to be strong and firm at times, and get out of the way at other times. In their effort to respond to the concerns of employees, Management needs to make sure that they do not fall into the trap of trying to please everyone, as that will only create new problems. Focus on a strategic vision created in partnership with employees. Focus on reducing red tape and politics within the office. focus on empowering employees. focus on recruiting, improving, and retaining the best employees. There are some exceptional employees who are giving 120% every day and we need to make sure these talented, hardworking, and committed employees are recognized, given the tools and resources they need to succeed, and given opportunities to grow and progress. They believe in this company and will be a big part of helping to navigate the challenges we face today and in the future.

    Pros

    Strong Benefits (Commuter Benefits, Inexpensive & Quality Healthcare Plan)
    Intelligent Colleagues
    Flexible Management
    Ability to Control Your Career Destiny

    You are rewarded for your ambitions and have the ability to grow your knowledge beyond the scope of your immediate job duties. There are numerous opportunities within this organization's various business lines, and individuals who have been here for a longer period of time often have experience working in multiple departments. The firm encourages continuing your education and offers reimbursement for approved educational expenses. Other reviews mention dull employees-- I find the staff here to be some of the brightest I've encountered in my 10+ years of professional work, however due to the substantial cultural changes, the employees are lagging in their adjustment to the new environment.

    Cons

    In the Midst of a Cultural Shift

    With any change comes pain, including disgruntled individuals who decide to leave the organization. Undeniably, M is still renovating the framework of the organization and there is ambiguity until that is done. However, the firm's actions are pointing to it becoming modernized and positioning itself for success.

    Advice to Management

    Find a way to incentivize individual performance to motivate employees to improve their contributions to the firm. Continue to modernize the company with a formal remote-work policy and pooled time off. Staff HR properly.

    Pros

    Benefits are good, especially the health insurance.
    There are some really good staff members here as long as you're not talking management.

    Cons

    Wages are all way below industry averages.
    M stands for meeting. They talk and talk and talk and nothing ever happens.
    Controlled by one Human Resources associate who doesn't seem to care either about the people who work there or the companies staff needs.
    The managers all hate each other.
    There is no where to advance and no opportunities for pay increases.
    Really not a great atmosphere.

    Advice to Management

    Figure out your human resource problem. It's a lot more expensive to train new people and onboard them than it is just to retain your staff.

    I worked at M Financial Group full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Highly professional environment with careful attention to detail and client service standards.

    Cons

    Teams are undervalued, demotivated and overworked. M attracts some of the most talented people in Portland and beyond, but they don't position them for success and they show little to no appreciation for the outstanding work delivered. M is a grind house and not a recommended environment for those who seek positive support and professional development.

    Advice to Management

    Break down the barriers between leadership and the teams. Reward the excellence delivered by your hard working teams and recognize ALL team members on the same set of standards. Improved leadership could save this company, but radical change is needed.

    I worked at M Financial Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Exceptionally nice office, a handfull of very great people, well stocked coffee bar and a great location.

    Cons

    Exceedingly dull environment which attracts and breeds exceedingly dull and lazy people. A good majority of people there are skating through their day not having to do much and quite happy with that, so the push to get anything accomplished is mostly absent. This is definitely an issue if you are to be driving teams to accomplish deliverables. Management seems almost completely blind to the lack of productivity of their teams in comparison with other companies' work expectations and there is support for some of the worst employees imaginable due to toxic politics. Even when management is made aware of issues, no action is taken. The HR department is one of the worst I have ever encountered anywhere, extremely snobbish and very unprofessional. The turnover rate at M says all you need to know.

    Advice to Management

    Pay attention to what is happening with your employees and what they are or are not producing, don't just turn a blind eye to it. Have higher expectations for your staff.

    4. Nice Espresso Bar
    5. Some good people who work hard and are ethical

    Cons

    1. Exceedingly slow moving management.
    2. Very political environment that enables and rewards bad and questionable behavior.
    3. Vindictive company that sued a former and very well liked and respected employee because she wanted to advance her career with another company 2000 miles away.
    4. Exceedingly high turnover in the last 11 months. Over 40 people have left in just 11 months
    5. M Financial has some serious issues pending with an outside audit and investigation by FINRA
    6. The company has had major complaints from female employees concerning sexual harrassment by people that make up their Member Firms

    Pros

    For interns specifically, the company does a great job at making sure we get the most out of the limited time we're there for. They arranged a meet-and-greet for the interns to get to know one another, HR put on a presentation for proper resume writing, and we got to sit down and have a Q&A cession with the CEO. Overall, it was a great environment to work in. Team work and communication was heavily encouraged. Great place to gain industry experience.

    Cons

    Opportunities to work for the company after the internship are variable, but still possible. Depends on the demand for each different department.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing! The moral of the company seems to be pretty high, so as long as the company can continue to be flexible with this ever-changing industry, it will remain a great place to work.
