    Pros

    Very smart networking engineers.
More personal relationships between employees than is typical for most companies.
Lots of room for personal initiative.
Ability to wear multiple hats and take on new responsibilities.

    Cons

Smaller company that competes with the giants means you must be nimble.
Must find your product niche and because the company cannot be all things to all people.

    Advice to Management

Be bold when developing new technology and make smart, calculated bets.

I worked at MRV Communications full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people have been there for a really long time and have a deep respect for each other. They are good people, hard workers.

    Cons

They have had many CEO's and executives come and go. The new CEO has cut out everything and prides himself on being cheap. He comes down hard on everyone, but not himself. He talks down to people and thinks that his "awe shucks" style comes across as "I am one of you" but he has a biting temper that his team is well aware of. He only works well with men, and that is why there are no women on his direct reports except for his General Counsel which he doesn't even involve. He likes people he can manipulate and only agrees with him. Don't leave your job to go work for him. Big mistake.

    Advice to Management

Ken Traub and his puppet Mark Bonney need to go.

I have been working at MRV Communications full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Laid back environment.
    - Good place for the new people to acquire experience as one here person wears many hats.

    Cons

    - The pay is well below industry standards. It is not common to hear some of the employees here haven't had a raise in 5 years.
    - Corruption & nepotism at middle and upper management levels. Many family members, friends, relatives of middle and upper management hold high paying jobs despite serious lacks of qualifications. Upper managers make purchases the company does not need for kickbacks.
    - Incompetent & backward management at multiple levels. Some set goals that would only align with their personal advancement with complete disregard to the employees and the whole company.
    - Several individuals in engineering who lack decency and respect for others. It is not uncommon to hear people yell at another for screwing up. Yet these mean and nasty individuals have been here for many years since they are friends/relatives of someone in upper management. They yell at their managers and directors at meetings, in front of everyone, making them quit within a few months.
