I have been working at MTSI full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

"Employees first" is one of the company's core values, and they practice it. The company treats its employees well, with good benefits, an ESOP, and lots of freedom. Even when times are tough (like during the budget sequestration and government shutdown scares of the past few years), much effort is made to keep everyone on board and gainfully employed. Customer problems are interesting and satisfying to work. New contracts are pursued mindfully and deliberately, with a focus only on those opportunities where the leadership feels that the company can bring real value to the table.

    Cons

There are many senior people with loads of experience in mid-level and senior positions who probably aren't going anywhere. Opportunities for advancement are limited.

    Advice to Management

Don't sell out, keep the focus on employees first, stick with the ESOP.

I have been working at MTSI full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

In my niche I'm fully embedded and supporting my USAF customer, meaning MTSI is simply a middleman for pay and benefits. By minimizing the cost / distractions attributable to being an employee, all three of us benefit. As a still-smallish & lean company one doesn't have to fight forms, bureaucracy, and narrow, preconceived notions of how something must be done.... rather they stay nimble enough to achieve. Moving to all employee owned.

    Cons

If you're someone that must be managed, driven by someone, or externally motivated, there are better places for you.

    Advice to Management

Keep the overhead costs of time/effort to employees low. Don't strive to grow big (e.g. seek max revenue) but rather to be profitable (e.g. seek max value). Stay rather small and nimble.

I have been working at MTSI full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Solving important problems for our nation and having fun while doing it! Soon to be 100% employee owned. A good deal of autonomy to work how and when you want to work. Not a lot of bureaucratic red tape "processes" that get in the way of real engineering and real customer support.

    Cons

This year our fantastic company hockey tickets were taken away. Bummer.

    Advice to Management

In the short time I've been here I've seen some erosion of our company culture as we attempt the transition to a larger company. This is a big deal and should not be taken lightly, it has ruined companies in the past.

New processes being implemented without concern for their effect on our responsiveness to the customer. New processes being implemented with no data to measure effectiveness, before/after, etc. Large scale decisions like this should be data driven.

    Pros

A company that truly cares about its people. Very competitive compensation package. Congenial atmosphere with flat hierarchy

    Cons

Contract work. Often working on short-term government contract, so you'll sometimes find yourselves waiting on that next drop.

    Advice to Management

Maintain your focus on the personnel. Employees are loyal to the company
