Dec 14, 2022 - High School Sports ReporterRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The High School Sports Editor is fantastic, she's extremely flexible and understanding, creates a positive work environment and deeply cares about all of her employees
Cons
I disagree with some of the broader ethics at MassLive, I dislike some of the articles they choose to publish, and I think some of their work is borderline plagiarism.

Overall Solid Experience!
Dec 20, 2020 - Digital Marketing Specialist in Worcester, MARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
There is excellent training. Solid Pay, Great benefits and good work life balance. Management is solid and has a decent culture. Sports reporting is great! Good company outings.
Cons
Management can tend to micromanage. There is not defined territories for reps and little defined verticals. The sales transition to Hunter/farmer from hybrid was a bad move. It’s good to have relationships with clients and not just pass on a hard earned sale an AE. That is a deflating feeling. The news side is good for local and sports but terrible for national news and political. You can feel that in the office as well at times.

Great opportunity to learn digital marketing & advertising skills and the business as a whole. Decent benefits.
Cons
Senior Advertising Sales Managment isnt the best. They don't encourage personal & professional development. No growth/pay opps unless you want to be a seller.

A decent launch point for recent grads, but frustrations abound
Jul 9, 2020 - Newsroom StaffRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- Many of the reporters are fantastic, diving into some tough journalism and getting results. - An emphasis on strong news, often breaking huge stories. - New reporters will certainly see their skills boosted in different ways as long as they have the right editor backing them. - Pay varies, but can be solid for new hires. The 401K is decent as well as employer contribution.
Cons
- There's no upward growth and management tends to argue among itself hard, often audibly pouring into newsrooms. - You're forced to drive cross-state to attend too many drinking parties and meetings that could have been emails, and you won't be compensated for the extra time put in. - Equipment is awful. There's a push for better video, but the company will provide you with old phones and just about nothing else. People barely know how to use any video-editing software. - Some management is clueless and some employees will be completely ignored, with no help given to helping them develop skills or find leads. - You'll often see co-workers visibly crying or frustrated because of poor management that demands everything from employees but refuses to give anything in return. - On that note, the turnover rate is huge. The past year saw a mass exodus of plenty of reporters and staff in other teams, such as sales. There are significantly better opportunities elsewhere. - There is a massive "bro" culture. Holiday parties consist of drinking. Outings always involve sports. (This could be a pro for you, but the 50-year-old men acting like frat boys is embarrassing.) - There's not much paid time off, including sick time. You'll need to be stingy with it. You also can't carry any of it over into a new year. - The social media content is a mess. In between actual news you'll see completely inane posts about Airbnb locations or articles to buy things to generate more cash for the company. The commenters are also some of the most nasty people you can imagine and never have anything positive to say about your work.

Not the best, not the worst
Feb 10, 2021 - Reporter in Boston, MARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
great story opportunities for new reporters
Cons
management was very disorganized which made work difficult
- Former Employee★★★★★
Pros
Good crew of people who believed in what they were doing. Pay was good for young reporters. Resources were given and editing was solid.
Cons
Communication and help could be hard to come by. Workload is heavy with emphasis on clicks and reads at times outweighing good stories.

Lots of staff attrition; freelancers live on fumes
Oct 11, 2019 - Freelance Reporter in Springfield, MARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The remaining staff reporters and editors are great. The work environment is respectful, friendly, and fun. You'll be able to cover important and interesting stories.
Cons
The newspaper has relied heavily upon freelancers in recent years, hiring very few staff reporters. For freelancers, compensation is low and benefits are non-existent. There is no job security, and little prospect for internal advancement. If you're young, use the opportunity to assemble a portfolio, then move on. The newspaper is part of the Newhouse family empire.
