MO going from family to corporation

Pros

The people who work at MO, who are the only reason why I haven't left months ago. And the "helping those with disabilities" factor.

Cons

Where to start. The company spends so much time, money, and effort making sure you feel like you "belong", however this has become very evidently a ruse as all cards are revealed when it comes to dealing with their employees from a management perspective. For example a few months ago we transitioned to a new set of "company values", having ditched the previous ones that were simpler and to the point. These were presented by HR as a radical new step forward until they started talking about how these would affect the yearly bonus. And then all was revealed, they basically made it impossible to achieve decent bonuses as not even an archangel would be able to get close to top marks. This goes to show the lengths they'll go to in cutting costs when it comes to their employees. Funnily enough however, they are very happy to waste money on every 3rd party service under the sun, even if no one knows why we bought into them or why we need X when it does exactly the same as Y and Z. The latest machination from MO's top heavy management is the "strong suggestion" to return to the office 3 days a week with so much as a 1 month notice during the height of summer. After having worked from home for 3 years straight you can imagine the response of most people, having made arrangements for their lives to fit around childcare and other similar problems. All this in an effort to... make people meet face-to-face? I didn't think MO was a dating agency... Once a year they come up with an anonymous internal HPO survey where questions are worded in such a way that the results can lead to - let's just say - varying interpretations. Bottom line this came as a shock to everyone I know in the company, and it comes at the worst possible time during an unprecedented cost of living crisis where people are going to increase their expenses by quite a lot to adapt. Now pair all of the above with lower salary and benefits compared to the tech industry average, almost no training opportunities, close to zero career development, etc... As I said, it's such a shame MO turned into this type of company, when I started 3-4 years ago it was a lovely company and it felt like a big family, everyone was nice and positive. The very opposite is true now.

Motability Operations Response

Thanks for reviewing us as an employer. We are pleased that you enjoy working with our wonderful colleagues and you are passionate about helping our customers – it’s what makes Motability Operations such a great place to work. In 2023 we transitioned to our new values to better reflect our organisation’s purpose: We care, We find solutions and We drive change. These values were jointly created with employees and they work because they resonate throughout our business. To become more transparent with our approach to reward and recognition, we put in place a new performance evaluation framework that ensures consistency across the business.. This framework falls in line with how our colleagues align to our new values but in addition enables us to differentiate performance contribution at an individual level, enabling us to set stretching objectives that help our colleagues to learn and grow. We also take the opportunity to regularly benchmark our remuneration packages and we’re confident that we compare favourably to other organisations. Like many companies, since the pandemic we have operated a hybrid working model where we encourage a mix of both office and remote working. This has worked well for us and we will continue to work in a hybrid way. However, we have an ambitious business strategy to deliver for our customers and we believe that being together is a key enabler to making this business transformation a success. We recognise that people’s lives and priorities have changed since COVID also and whilst we will encourage teams to come together in the office to connect and collaborate more we acknowledge that individuals will need to re-adjust their balance and this will involve some mutual flexibility. We’d encourage you to speak to your line manager if you have further questions.

Pros

Good pay and bonuses Great customer service

Cons

Going in a backward direction. The leadership team seem to be out of touch, and have just recently announced that all employees must attend the office at least 3 days a week (increasing from 1 or 2 days dependant on your role). There has been no actual reason given for why they are increasing the number of office days, other than business jargon, and ‘so we can work collaboratively to decide the future direction of Motability Operations’. Maybe that holds weight for senior members of staff, but for the rest of us, who aren’t making decisions on the future direction of the company, it’s a ridiculous reason to give. Unfortunately Motability will lose lots of great staff due to taking a one size fits all approach to office working. It used to be an amazing place to work, and whilst it still is a good place to work, the decisions being taken by the leadership team are continuously making it a worse place to work

Thank you for taking the time to review us as an employer. It's great to see you find our reward package competitive and that you admire our dedicate to providing excellent customer service. Therefore, we have put in place a fair and consistent message across the organisation that we will operate in a hybrid model of 3-2, where everyone will work on-site 3-days and 2-days remotely.
