Pros

Made lasting friendships with people who wanted to positively impact our school community.

Cons

This school is such a disservice to children, educators, and the Austin community. The CFO barely veils his racism, speaks disparagingly of the families and community we serve, and told me BLM was a "trend" he doesn't follow. Low and inconsistent expectations throughout school for children resulting in unsafe school environment and little to no learning. I had students having panic attacks in my classroom because they were stressed their physical safety and worried they wouldn't get into high school with so much of their learning time interrupted by misbehaviors. Many misbehaviors stemming from learning gaps that desperately need to be closed, but support staff to help our kids close gaps quit because they did not feel safe/were not supported and/or were not assigned to our grade. Support staff works incredibly hard to support kids but are not supported by administration. Children and staff constantly being physically hit and kicked by students with no recourse. Not enough social workers employed, and those who are there are doing their absolute best but just cannot support everyone who needs it. Admin is not solutions oriented. Sadly have heard some staff use ableist language in regards to our exceptional learners, and some would refer students out of class immediately because they did not want to include them in the general classroom. Dean of Students and some teachers use homophobic and transphobic language. However, many educators and staff here who want to do what's best for kids and our community - many who have a wealth of experience and best practices from other schools! - but they are ignored so challenges, including significant learning gaps and safety, are never addressed. Students and staff deserve better.
