I worked at NESTA part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good, friendly environment to work in. Many interesting, inspiring and unique challenges to work on.

    Cons

Not the best for someone who wants to deliver products or services to people. With a think-tank environment this is not a strong focus. Projects tend to come and go.

    Advice to Management

Consider carefully what the long(er) term implications are of committing to projects and what the maintenance plan might be when starting out.

Culture and management do not alert build on the strengths of the team

    Pros

Very interesting and intellectually challenging. Freedom to think.

    Cons

Nobody makes time to speak to anyone particularly senior management, so they come across as very unapproachable, which is, I am sure, not their intention.
Not very diverse - particularly BAME staff. Becoming increasingly bureaucratic with 1980s style procedures and corporate services teams - which seems very out of kilter with the ethos of the organisation.

    Advice to Management

Make time to talk to staff 1:1 including just small talk in lifts.
Take the diversity issue seriously because it is very hard to reverse engineer into a mono cultural organisation.

I have been working at NESTA full-time

    Pros

    - Very interesting people
    - Very interesting work
    - Strong / fun relationships with colleagues is the norm
    - Given a lot of independence to do what interests you, in the way that you think it should be done
    - Intellectually stimulating and rewarding

    Cons

    - Extremely comfortable org - very white & middle class (I assume this is to do with salaries being low, contracts being short, and the fact that hiring process is so limited that good people are not snapped up when opportunity is there).
    - Above the 'heads of department' level there is a disconnect with rest of organisation.

    Advice to Management

Change the hiring policy to enable the hiring of exceptional talent when we see it!
Articulate more clearly how the different functions of Nesta relate to each other (is Nesta doing too much?)
Directors upwards: spend more time engaging with staff (attend some project meetings, etc.)

I worked at NESTA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Pretty dynamic and creative
Has put in place a much more systematic approach to showing impact - not aware of another comparable place with as much
    V international workforce
    Pretty clear and strong values

    Cons

Pretty fluid which some people find unsettling.
If you're the kind of person who likes to know exactly what they'll be doing in 6 months time may not be for you.
    Quite tough performance management

    Advice to Management

Would be easier if Nesta did fewer things!

    I worked at NESTA full-time

    Pros

Working at Nesta you are exposed to some of the most interesting areas in social innovation. Other people working there are credible and you get to build a good network internally and externally. Work / life balance is good and so are the terms and conditions.

    Cons

Administratively NESTA is in the dark ages which can be a source of frustration. Senior Management often disappoint by not giving strategic direction. Progression is tough and there is a high turnover.

    Advice to Management

Develop a coherent organisation wide strategy.

I worked at NESTA as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

    * Great benefits, felt like the company are genuinely interested in employee well being

    * Flexible work culture and great teams trying to make a differences. No micromanagement - as long as you get work done you can work anywhere and leave early/late

    * Teams are genuinely friendly and helpful.

    Cons

    * Real lack of ethnic/cultural/educational diversity. Out of an office 150 people only a handful were not Caucasian. Over 60 percent of employees also had MA which really speaks about the unconscious bias in the selection process to work there especially as Masters is not a listed requirements in any job descriptions.

    * A lot of report writing with no real measure of impact. Felt like an incredibly middle class approach to trying to address social problems. Not to say no good work was being done but real doubt over how much impact the organisation has.

    * Be prepared to handle in office politics with a small p. The majority of people are very nice/qualified/hard working but nearly everyone is employed on long term contracts so massive turnover rates with intense jostling for positions at certain times of the year. Some teams definitely hire based on favouritism (events).

    Advice to Management

If you want to actually make a difference with your work you're really going to have to start hiring more diverse people. The worst thing
