Current Employee - Little Bit of Everyone in Shelbyville, IN

I have been working at Nidec full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Everyone has a chance for advancement if you want it and work hard enough. First place I've ever been that gave me a chance to become anything beside just a worker. Most of the employees get along pretty well but its a factory. Vacation and PTO time as well as good benefits like medical, HSA, vision, dental and 401K plans. Overtime is always available if you want it.

    Cons

Management doesn't treat valued employees like they are valued. They hear what you say but don't want to listen. They complain about part quality at meetings but it is hard to have quality parts when they have molds that run like crap. So they often make it feel like it is everyone else's fault. They do not have a competitive pay scale so it is hard to keep people and often run short on people, which makes it harder on everyone else.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps the management and HR should pay more attention to what people are doing on their computers all day, instead of doing their work and making others do their work. Especially when they are only a temp. You should perhaps spend a little more time appreciating your long time valued employees instead of pushing them off. Over staff until you find who is going to work. Stop being so short changed and give your valued employees better pay and not take so long on your hiring process. That's a huge reason we lose people.

    I worked at Nidec full-time

    Pros

Nidec purchased Avtron, Ohio. It was great at first. No changes were made to the Avtron company, until....

    Cons

Very Poor Leadership today!!! After the first full year, things started to change, poor health benefits, 401k issues, flexible spending accounts. It was St. Louis's way or no way! No one cares about the employees or how or what Avtron did. Changes happen and no one visited from St. Louis to see us or how we liked things or what we did.

    Advice to Management

Stop letting good leaders go. I resigned because my boss in no longer there. Your replacement is not good and has NO respect for employees or our home life. Work harder and more with less! That is more business.

    Cons

The Japanese management team at the headquarters in Kyoto has no idea on how to management a US or European companies. They asked a lot of questions repeatedly with no understanding of the business. They did not contribute much and just waste a lot of other people's time.

    Advice to Management

Give more autonomy to local management team. Do not micro manage. Have more trust on employees in the US and Europe

    Pros

Company with strong balance sheet, excellent move to acquire the Emerson motor business which was given a second life. Willing to invest in the motor business.

    Cons

Unrealistic expectation from the employees. The targets are set extremely high which no one believes in. Always get beat up in management meetings with the Nidec CEO. He chased away many good executives such as Mr. Kure and Mr. Murphy.

    Advice to Management

Learn to adopt too western culture and value employees more

    Pros

Within the subsidiary for which I work: work hour flexibility, job flexibility, first name basis with senior managment, genuine attempt to preserve jobs for good performers.

    Cons

Within the subsidiary for which I work: management aversion to risk, no attention paid to employee retention (poor quality of facilities, no salary market check, no real career path development).
