I worked at Optical Express full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Worked with some very talented staff and was proud to be part of and to have worked on the new brand re-launch and associated activity.

Good level of investment and budgets for projects and activity.

Direct line manager was a pleasure to work for.

    Cons

Some level of difficulty re engaging others within the business to help on projects and activity. Found certain members of the business outdated in their approach but overall, majority of staff were great to work with.

    Advice to Management

Enthuse and inspire employees with good and honest feedback - you'll reap the rewards!

Also to review the amount of holidays the company provides - not in line with most businesses and can be a big put off to anyone new joining the business.

I worked at Optical Express full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

None whatsoever. If I could give zero stars I would. The other exploited, long-suffering souls that you work alongside and can share a joke with are the only relatively good thing about this terrible company.

    Cons

    - Terrible pay, long hours (40 hours a week +, with unpaid overtime)
    - Bank holiday working as standard and two days off for Christmas and New Year
    - Bare minimum of breaks and holiday allowance
    - Appalling, bullying management (if you think you already know what micromanagement is like, think again)
    - Racism, sexism, prejudice, nepotism and homophobia rife at all levels of company
    - Disgusting attitude towards staff: you're seen as easily replaceable
    - Little in the way of staff benefits
    - Poor financial outlook for company (losing money)
    - Ridiculously high staff turnover because of terrible working environment
    - Managers who don't know how to manage (especially in the marketing department)
    - Terrible company reputation amongst suppliers and customers
    - Extremely questionable business tactics
    - Blasé attitude to ASA marketing standards and guidelines for cosmetic surgery
    - No pay rises (unless you're in a senior management position, of course)
    - A greedy, bullying CEO who uses fear and threats to get his own way

Don't believe any of the positive reviews you read about this place. It really is the worst company I have ever had the misfortune to work for.

    Advice to Management

Resign. You don't deserve to be in positions of power. Without an entire clear out of the corrupt senior management and a change of CEO, this business will continue to fail. Treat your ordinary staff like actual human beings who are a part of your business, rather than as robots for you to exploit and treat like tools.

    Pros

    its a job
If you need eye care or surgery you know the staff and procedures
Building is nice and kept clean

    Cons

    * Minimum wage
    * Team Managers who bully not coach
    * Not allowed to have air con switched on
    * No blinds on windows
    * No development Opportunities
    * Can be sacked at any time if your face doesn't fit.
    * Bonus is what makes up your min wage salary and they take some off you if you dare to be sick
    * Staff are not empowered to do their jobs
    * Processes are poor and stores don't answer their phones.

    Advice to Management

Get your team leaders on management courses to teach them how to lead by example and not bully staff
Improve internal communications and be honest when things don't quite work out as planned - staff would appreciate this rather than being promised change which never happens and nothing is ever heard again about it.
Offer development opportunites, only time a manager speaks to you is to pull you up (well that's how it feels)
Try and retain your good guys, if you pay peanuts you will get monkeys. No one is going to sit for minimum wage when they can walk into a bank call centre and earn 5K a year more once they realise the true sorry state of the Optical Express call centre.
PS loads of your staff are taking the proverbial, but your managers don't know what to check or look for and you would be surprised who puts on a shiny happy face and deep down doesn't give a hoot.

    Cons

There is no progression opportunities for career development. Staff shortages. Internal working of the company do not feel professional. Over worked and poor recognition how hard the employees work. Felt there was favoritism for certain employees.

    Advice to Management

Work on keeping employee happiness as a priority

    Pros

    - Hours to fit in university study
    - New upgraded building
    - The people you work with
    - Bonus payments

    Cons

    - Team leaders tend to have been promoted to the position, have no managerial experience and generally like to throw their weight around
    - A number of outbound calling roles in the call center - booking laser consultations, booking sight tests or confirming appointments. The latter 2 were easier roles.
    - Told to answer incoming calls with little training. Very bad communication between call center and stores

    Advice to Management

Employ team leaders with managerial experience instead of those who perform on the phones
Collect data more ethically instead of hounding people on the phone who have entered a competition and have no intention of having laser eye surgery unless it's for free.
Starting prices for laser surgery are very unrealistic (e.g from £395) I had never heard of a customer get quoted that price

I worked at Optical Express full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Exciting industry
Customers and the ability to change their lives - when treatment successful
Opportunity to develop an extensive technical understanding
The challenge of a selling a very hard to sell product - making it very rewarding

    Cons

Terrible reputation - staff and customer
    Lack of customer service ethos
    Poor leaders
Dishonest to customers and staff - company will promise the earth and deliver misery at times
Pay is outrageously low. Bonus perimeters constantly change and at times can be very lucrative.
If you negotiate pay rises - get it in writing as they take forever to pay it and don't back-date - if they ever pay it.
They will bully you to work all over and unsociable hours if you're the strongest performer as they want you to turn underperforming clinics around. They have managers in clinics who aren't capable and they expect the strong performers (sales staff) to improve their clinics/business without reward. You'll find the strongest sales staff won't hang around for long. Not the mention the constant feeling of vulnerability given the number of times in recent years subsidiaries have gone into administration and store closures.

    Advice to Management

Strip the weak leaders and dead wood out of the business instead of letting the best members leave. Pay them more as oppose to paying a little for the team you have and the business will improve.

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Good friends with fun outside work, we bond like prisoners in a concentration camp until we are liberated.

    Cons

Bullying is rife. Unpaid overtime is expected. Ignore the 5 star ratings put here by OE, the morons.

    Advice to Management

Management does not take advice, they follow orders. It is a concenration camp after all.
