    Pros

Large company with small-group feel within each department or group.

    Pros

Strong balance of responsibility and empowerment, coupled with a culture of integrity

Can be a little silo at times. Management team at Chicago and Minneapolis should work on communicating more continuous

    Advice to Management

    Provide hands-on training

I have been working at Opus full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Wonderful people, great environment. I really like coming to work every day because I love the people with whom I work, and I'm passionate about what we're working on.

    Cons

Opus for work is still very small; there are not a ton of resources so we are forced to be scrappy.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing and see what comes of it; there is a lot of room to grow and if you keep at it, good things will happen.

    Pros

Decent compensation and benefits. Not a lot of micromanagement but needs to have some day to day management involvement.

    Cons

ZERO training. Expected to know everything and complete you job tasks the way your upper manager wanted, yet had very little day to day assistance or instructions. Garbage in garbage out.

Expect to work from home most nights.

Self-performed work needs to be heavily addressed. No wonder most managers want to sub everything out, field crews are left to their own and the work takes as long as it takes and costs and much as it costs. No control.

    Advice to Management

Work more in teams and monitor the work of your subordinates, work and show them how you would like it done instead of being disappointed when it gets done another way. Create some actual training by doing activities with individuals, not lecturing to the group.

    Heavy overhaul on self-performed work.

I worked at Opus full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I took this job to avoid relocation. So I guess I got to work in a city I chose. Other than that....read cons

    Cons

low pay, poor upper management - obviously, they are bankrupt in many of their regions. poor safety, construction division is used as a means to an end for a real estate deal. How does that model work during a real estate bubble? see for yourself.

    Advice to Management

Take pride in construction group's capabilities. Real estate transactions should only be one of your focus'.

    Pros

People worked well together and you always felt part of a team. A family at work. Management really cared about their employees. They were very well taken care of.

    Cons

The real estate development industry can be a roller coaster ride. Opus had to downsize quite a bit due to the economy and a few major internal issues. They had to dissolve a few entities and close several offices-then regroup. It will be difficult to find employment with them unless you live in MN.

    Advice to Management

When the RE development takes a healthly turn, hire conservatively and wisely and prepare for the time it changes again. Opus is a good company and employees want to retire with them.

The downturn in economy really hurt the construction industry. They'll be stronger tomorrow!

    Pros

Good work / life balance. Very family friendly.

    Cons

They are going bankrupt! If they survive this I will be surprised.

    Advice to Management

Don't assume that what has worked for you in the past will continue to work!

    Pros

I have been able to make an impact in my role. People are friendly and caring and good work is valued and recognized.

    Cons

Sometime groups move forward before fully understanding the process needed. Tends to be a lot of secrecy around things adn the whole picture isn't always evident.

    Advice to Management

    Please turn the company around!
