Pros

- Good salary and progression - Interesting problems to solve - Strong team to work with - Product and application is very interesting - Good stock options Overall, I have enjoyed my time at PlayerData. It's an interesting company with a talented team that is enjoyable to work with. The pace is fast, and the environment requires people to adapt quickly, which is something I have personally found rewarding.

Cons

On-call responsibilities were previously unpaid, although the company has recently introduced a paid on-call policy, which is a promising improvement. Employee departures can sometimes be unexpected. That said, they maintain a high performance bar, which increases the value and visibility of strong individual contributions helping my growth.

Pros

Salary was fair Flexible remote working Quite a few talented and good people Some interesting tech

Cons

Some very talented but very irritable gatekeeper-type senior employees, that make it difficult for newer employees to learn in a supportive work environment Poor Product Management processes made Product Development very difficult, requirements were very vague and goals would frequently change due to senior leadership requests, regardless of the planned work resulting in a top-down micromanagement culture Leadserhip is extremely focussed on the startup mentality to make the company a huge success (naturally), however the startup company culture has already become set in it's ways and is stagnant due to lack of new blood or counterbalance to the current leadership No company stock options, when the main motivation to work harder from leadership was to increase our stock options value Basic issues in contract and related HR documentation We were using Discord instead of Slack to save money and other limits to using industry standard tools based on cost Didn't get sent one of the company's product devices to use and had to use my own mobile device for testing the mobile app we worked on The company anniversary event organised for the employees was a picnic and some games in a park. While certain employees travel to sports stadiums around the world as a part of their job role Tech cliquey with many inside jokes, as since several very early key employees are very close with the founder and all have a staked share in the company

Dysfunctional culture behind a polished exterior

Pros

* Talented, well-intentioned colleagues doing their best in a difficult environment.

Cons

* Leadership was a consistent concern. Expectations around availability regularly extended into time off, with engineers effectively on-call 24/7 without additional compensation. There were also noticeable gaps in domain understanding at senior levels, which affected decision-making across the organisation. * Hiring practices lacked consistency and meritocracy. Roles were often filled through personal networks, and there appeared to be a preference for candidates with certain sporting backgrounds, regardless of role relevance. * People processes were poorly handled. Redundancies and internal issues were managed in ways that felt overly visible and lacking in professionalism or discretion. * Terminations could be sudden, with unclear or inconsistently applied disciplinary procedures, contributing to a sense of instability. * Products were frequently released before they were ready, leading to ongoing reliability issues and repeated rework. * Product understanding outside of core technical teams was limited. A small number of knowledgeable individuals carried a disproportionate share of the load, while others did not meaningfully close the gap. * The overall environment felt insecure. There was an expectation to support and promote products that were not yet fully functional. * A strong focus on external image and “high-performance” culture often masked underlying operational and cultural issues.
