Interesting Idea but held back by Bureaucracy
Mar 15, 2013 - Project Manager in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The people are incredibly smart and fun if you can stop working for a few minutes to enjoy their company. Great mission in helping students and educators to embrace digital learning.
Cons
For a company that claims to leverage technology they are woefully behind in many aspects (how's your refurbished pc with Windows 2010? No, you many not have a laptop but yes, you still must work this weekend.) Employee turnover is incredibly high and it is normal to think someone who has been there for one year is a "veteran". The culture is very "command and control" with a strict hierarchy of decision makers. There is an effort to make it more collaborative, but it has been with mixed results as even the committees set to develop new programs have to report into the same hierarchy to approve all of their work, so it ends up just creating more meetings and resentment for those involved. There is a huge rivalry between different programs as they expand or contract and are seen as competing for resources. There is also a tense relationship between the two offices in NY. 9-6:45pm while eating lunch at your desk is a normal day.

Amazing organization, highly recommend
Jan 28, 2017 - Blended Learning SpecialistRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
This has been a great organization for me. My teammates are very committed to our work, and we are working on some important areas of social equity - particularly focusing on kids and their parents and teachers in high-poverty schools. Very positive supportive work-culture. The President is actively involved in making sure everyone has the tools and professional development weneed to innovate and do our work. I don't know the CEO that well but she seems like she is thoughtful about how our work has to evolve- not just a founder mentality. I love the new HR director. So overall very good.
Cons
The only tough part of the job is that the schools we work with are disadvantaged, which is why we do this work, but it can be tough seeing kids from these circumstances with all the odds stacked against them. And the new administration is not going to bmake anything easier for them.

An excellent mission-driven organization running a great program with terrific leadership and staff
Oct 25, 2011 - Manager in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I have worked for many years in New York City nonprofits and this is one of the most constructive, positive environments I've had the opportunity to work in. Even in an administrative role you feel the program's impact on the children and families it serves. Most staff participate in the program as volunteers, further supporting a strong sense of unity and mission. It is a fast paced, high energy environment - the leadership is very clear and very supportive and there's a solid management structure in place.
Cons
There are times when your work may demand longer hours -but this is true in any high-functioning nonprofit organization. The core leadership and management team have made great strides as the organization has grown, both in increasing benefits and in building a sense of community and fun within the workplace.

Pros
I have been at CFY for more than a year, and I have been really impressed by the leadership and mission of what seems like a pretty unique nonprofit. People here are really motivated by helping kids in poor communities succeed. There is a real commitment to making sure that employees have all of the tools they need, and the president himself has been taking the lead on getting technology and office upgrades that make our work easier and in organizing the teams in the right way. Positive culture with no gosspi and no backbiting.
Cons
It is a fast-paced environment. I have had to work late a few times but that's been ok by me. Ddon't join if you only want a strict 9-5 opportuntiy.

Really good place to work
Jun 9, 2014 - Anonymous in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I have worked at CFY for more than a year, and this has been one of the most positive experiences of my career. The organization's programs are making a real difference for our partner schools and the staff are positively motivates and great to work with. Seeing the recent review that is so extreme and negative, I am not sure what that person is reacting to because the management in my experience is supportive, engaged, effective. Colleagues here are some of the best I've seen.
Cons
I wish we could have more cross-office visits in our different regions so we could do more in-person meetings with people from different regions. That would help us get to know each other better.

Pros
CFY is a mission-oriented organization with smart dedicated staff and a compelling vision and program. CFY's people are my favorite part about coming to work each day. From my experience here, I've seen CFY constantly innovating both within its on-the-ground service delivery and around the use of learning technology. CFY empowers staff to take ownership over their own work. Management celebrates staff successes, while also making sure that every employee pulls his or her weight.
Cons
CFY is an intense place to work, not a traditional 9-5 experience, so it's not for everyone. But if you're eager to make a difference in a fast-paced environment filled with great people, then this is a great place for you.
