Pros

One can see that most leads and staff are very passionate about defending press freedom and protecting journalists, making it a mission-driven organization really aiming to make the most impact possible in this important area for democracy and human rights globally. RSF leads wisely choose a realistic, strategic approach to selected cases where they can make a significant impact according to the organization's capacities. It has a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere covering very different regions facing threats to free journalism. Also, RSF is overall well recognized in this context of press freedom in several regions of the world, which opens doors for fruitful partnerships with relevant organizations. Other positive points are the flexibility of working hours and hybrid work format, as well as good work-life balance for some posts which deal more with management and operational tasks. Overall, it has been a rewarding pleasant experience, especially owing to some significant learnings about RSF key topics during the process and the network of local correspondents doing important contributions to press freedom in their countries. The opportunity seemed quite promising/exciting at the start but then gradually became bureaucratic and patronized, so I have the impression it could have been a much more rewarding experience if it was in a more central/prioritized office with different headquarters leads.

Cons

Most leads of the RSF Paris headquarter adopt a patronizing, top-down and intransigent approach towards the regional offices. As headquarters tend to over-centralize almost all the works, this creates bottlenecks which hinder a good flux of regional projects, publications and positionings.
