I worked at Samsung Engineering full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great health insurance and other benefits are standard in industry.

    Cons

Lacking a firm business model for the local offices. Korean headquarter seem to be unable to understand the North American way of conducting business and therefore made some major mistakes that will hard to overcome in the future. Advice are asked for after a decision have been made and there is no way to change the engineering or design.

    Advice to Management

Headquarter need to realizes the competency that exist at this office need to be incorporated on any North American endeavor. This could be an American office with a Korean backing and support instead of a American office run like a Korean business.

I worked at Samsung Engineering full-time

    Pros

Good salary. Great benefits. Great co-workers. Work hours allow for every other Friday off. Expat Koreans are friendly and respectful.

    Cons

Too much worrying not to make HQ (Seoul) upset. Requirement to meet 60 hours of training each year is sometimes burdensome.

    Advice to Management

Improve communications between Samsung Engineering America and HQ (Seoul). Make office more American and solicit more work from American clients.

I have been working at Samsung Engineering full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Large company with many resources. Self funded so decisions are made within corporate headquarters. Name recognition.

    Cons

No growth opportunity unless you are Korean. (this is not a hate related statement, and I am not only speaking of myself. have a good relationship with all other non Korean staff on the local team and it is the same situation for each of them)
Pay is only competitive with a 40 hour average salary position but the difference is the work week is a strict 55 hour (half day every Saturday unless you use vacation time to have it off)
Lastly of course is the leadership, all but 2 of the senior staff has less than 10 years total experience. The 2 who have more have less than 2 years field experience.

    Advice to Management

Promote based on performance not conformance. Make sure someone is a leader before assigning them a leadership role. I would say test the knowledge of your leaders also but there are no leaders in leadership positions so I can understand the lack of knowledge.

I worked at Samsung Engineering full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits are the best. Houston company values are good, but leadership is lacking. The Koreans are nice, cordial people and if you like cultural diversity, this place has it. I found the cultural mix interesting.

    Cons

Strong Korean influence: its a Korean company trying to be successful in the American market. Not an American office with a Korean influence. The Koreans seem to be afraid of the Western culture so they turn down a whole bunch of work.

    Advice to Management

This is an American office and should be run by Americans. Instead, there are American officers, but they have little say. its the Korean way, or no way.

I have been working at Samsung Engineering full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The team I worked with is amazing. Probably it is not the case for all teams, but the work environment is very friendly in general. It is a fast growing company, so there are many challenges and changes in a regular basis.

    Cons

The path is not very well defined given to the fast pace of the growing and expansion of the company. At the high level management level they have a very asian work culture, it depends on your manager how that is translated to the rest of the team. The company is still figuring out how to get a more effective press communication in the western market. It is a huge company, thus, it depends what you do projects can progress at a faster or slower rate.
