Sink or Swim Environment

Pros

Competitive pay for the region. Looks great on a resume. Unbelievably gorgeous surroundings. Getting to be a part of a world class opera organization.

Cons

It’s very much a sink or swim environment. There is a lot of gossip that spreads throughout the org that gets in the way of the actual work and it can be very distracting. People complain a lot and it can be incredibly draining. Some, not all, in leadership play mind games to test their direct reports to see how they react. Keep in mind that many in this organization have a music background so they feel most comfortable in a cutthroat, competitive environment which often creates a culture of fear. A lot of job protection for inefficient & technology illiterate old guard who have outlived their effectiveness as employees. Some are merely figureheads that come in for a half day every day or are constantly late and somehow keep their jobs. Many depts are bloated with redundant employees who should have been let go a very long time ago. They jam up processes and are often obstinate/stubborn when it comes to adopting technological solutions (likely because they would be out of a job).

Needs Improvement

Pros

Morale is great during the season, seasonal artists and employees truly care about the work they’re doing and help to make the campus an enjoyable workplace during the summer months. Production quality is outstanding for a three-month festival. One of the best apprentice singer programs in the country.

Cons

Low pay, especially for the cost of living in this area. To echo other reviewers, some managers should not be in leadership positions (in any capacity), and there is no clear vetting process beyond an annual employee review. Micromanaging is an issue within departments that have experienced significant turnover in recent years. Gossip culture is prevalent and draining for those who don’t want anything to do with it, and there is no real way to avoid the negativity or commiseration while working year-round. Compliments paid to dedicated team members are often met with vitriol from others who openly dislike their jobs.

Getting Worse

Pros

It's a nice campus to work on. Health insurance is good, but we live in Santa Fe where you can't get a doctors appointment...

Cons

They can't keep up with national wages and certainly don't keep up with cost of living in Santa Fe. Some managers should not be in the role they have. There is very little room to move up for career advancement.
