I have been working at Scientific Learning full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Seeing the impact the products have on children, families and educators provides an enormous amount of pride and passion. The company culture is very people focused and always looking to improve. They look for fun ways to keep employees engaged and motivated. The company's Core values are well represented by employees. It's a genuinely fun place to work. Excellent work-life balance, paid time off and many company holidays. Cool people work here.

    Cons

Some of the managers may not have all the skills necessary to manage successfully.

    Advice to Management

Provide better training for new managers on how to manage people. Also provide up-training on an ongoing basis. Encourage managers to self improve.

I worked at Scientific Learning (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The products really help students. The company is small enough for your work to be noticed. Remote workers are supported fairly well.

    Cons

The products are not positioned really well for the current market landscape (uphill battle). The leadership at times has been abrupt or frantic.

    Advice to Management

Look to be acquired by a larger, privately held company that has the capital to make additional products.

I worked at Scientific Learning full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Amazing products, strong mission of helping students, good benefits.

    Cons

Previous CEO put the company in a precarious financial position, focused way too much on profit and growing the company at the risk of product efficacy.

    Advice to Management

Keep it simple, focus on employee retention and satisfaction and your customer base and retention will grow as well.

The founding science and the products themselves are amazing. Most employees are incredibly dedicated individuals.

    Cons

Difficulty in getting product to market via cloud and iPad/tablet technology is very frustrating to those selling and training customers how to use such an innovative too.

I worked at Scientific Learning full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice mission (teaching kids to read with technology). Nice people who are passionate about their work. Some good patents. Lots of smart people who know a lot about the educational software market. Adequate to above-average benefits.

    Cons

Product is just not competitive in the marketplace - years and years behind where it should be. The pace of development at Scientific Learning is glacial. Senior leadership doesn't have an adequate plan for growing and becoming a relevant company. As a consequence, salaries aren't particularly competitive with the rest of the bay area. Check the stock price - it's not an accident.

    Advice to Management

To be an educational software company, you need to understand both education (check) and software (big non-check).
