Sinking ship

Pros

The people at the IC level are wonderful people, albeit inexperienced compared to other technology companies - this is intentional so they can keep pay as low as possible. Customers are all in the K-12 Education Space, and are pleasant to deal with. Product is just a simple chrome extension, barely even a software product, so it’s easy to learn and bugs are not an issue.

Cons

New CEO stepped in January ‘23 and single handedly destroyed the culture. Clearly a miserable, negative person and that’s trickled down to all levels. They just required everyone to return to the office in Feb ‘23, after many people moved or bought houses hours away. Many were hired to be remote and had the rug pulled out from under them. Company has totally failed to break into any new industries, and the only industry Screencastify has customers in (schools) has lost or is losing federal funding from Covid. Lack of ethics/questionable decisions, such as firing people on maternity/paternity leave and dramatically raising prices to customers when competitors offer more features for a lower price. In spite of dramatically slashed budgets, at this point joining would be unwise - company is unlikely to exist in a few years.

Beware before considering joining this disheartening workplace

Pros

No pros except for a handful of individual contributor level people who are also very frustrated.

Cons

Working at this company has been a nightmarish experience, and I feel compelled to share my insights to caution others. The work environment is nothing short of toxic and hostile. Leadership, driven by a lack of empathy, sets unrealistic deadlines for individual contributors, rendering any attempt to voice concerns or frustration a one-way ticket to expulsion. The leadership team thrives on bringing in like-minded individuals to exploit ICs, coercing them into working insane hours to boost revenue in the face of the company's evident failure. Existing customers are fleeing, and new sales deals are slipping away daily, leading to a decline in product usage and revenue. The FTO policy is nothing more than a facade; taking holidays is frowned upon, and vacations become punishment as an overwhelming workload awaits upon return. The unrealistic expectations placed on Customer Success, Sales, and Engineering contribute to a demotivating and confusing work atmosphere. There is no real product team nor a QA team. Support team plays a pseudo QA. A new product leader joined who is a narcissist. Heavy surveillance, micromanagement, and a desperate C-suite trying to salvage a sinking ship make this company a cesspool of toxicity, devoid of work ethics, unfair compensation, no job security, and no healthy work-life balance.

Pros

Teachers genuinely love Screencastify, and it's nice to work in EdTech. There are a number of strong individual contributors on the team who are great to work with but also miserable.

Cons

Textbook toxic workplace. Unfortunate combination of micromanagement and not being able to make any decisions while being expected to take on enormous ownership. Unclear expectations that change on a dime with no explanation, and zero ability from management to take feedback or provide support for the team. Layoffs and firings are always around the corner and the team is often not informed or given reasons when they happen. Everyone is always waiting for the other shoe to drop and expected to take on additional work without a word after said layoffs or firings. There’s enormous conflict between the leaders, some of who hate each other and are rarely on the same page. Little to no company direction. No opportunities for career growth. Everyone is seen as interchangeable and asked to take on work outside of their job description, with no recognition. Huge conflict of interest in the CEO being head of the board, he chooses more profit in his pocket over people every time.
