    "Software Developer"

Former Employee - Software Developer in Salinas, CA

    Pros

    - Competitive Pay
    - Good work/life balance, you will only work 8 hours
    - Technology is awesome (N-Tier, CI, Microservices, NoSQL, etc...)
    - Knowledge co-workers with real skills
    - Development Manager loves technology and doesn't nickel and dime your time
    - An effort IS being made to modernize the job but still needs work
    - You will learn!

    Cons

    The Package
    - No 401k
    - Can't work from home
    - Only one week of sick (never increases)
    - Only two weeks vacation (never increases)
    - No Dental or Vision

    Advice to Management

My advice to management was to talk to the employees and see what truly makes them happy. The company wants happy employees and is starting to make minor improvements (removed the timecard it used to require) but until vacation increases and a matching 401k is added, it may struggle keeping valuable employees.

    Pros

The good thing about SSCS is that its not a stressful job, its pretty easy going, you never have to answer your phone after the end of the work days. As a programmer, thats actually a huge perk.

    Cons

    1) The company's software is badly designed, awkward, looks like the early 1990s.
    2) Ugly location, (across from factories) mandatory timecard where you have to be in building EXACTLY in four hour blocks and take EXACTLY one hour lunch.
    3) Your input is never welcome/listened to.
    4) No 401K. No dental. Strict two weeks off/yr. Work Christmas and New Year's Eves.
    5) Unpleasant/awkward managers.

    Advice to Management

Its nice that the family circle that runs the company has been working together over past 20 years or whatever. But its also a huge disadvantage when no senior manager has spent any time working anywhere else, and also seem to dislike interacting with employees. These people haven't ever done anything else, and it shows!!!!

    Pros

    - Business day ends at 5:00

    Cons

The CEO used to run gas stations and the business is run like a gas station. No projects, no timelines, no duedates. Just punch in and punch out. Employees are all disgruntled and management is angry, disrespectful, awkward. Left support last year and customers hated the software. Very, very negative working environment.

    Advice to Management

None. They do not take advice.

    Cons

-Software is lacking innovation (Access 2003)
    -No 401k or stock options
-Workstation area is grey and depressing (1990's), would be nice to have a modern look

    Advice to Management

Would push to bring innovation to software solutions instead of using out of date technology.

I have been working at Service Station Computer Systems full-time

    Pros

    - If you have no career plans and want to have just a steady pay check this is the place for you.
    - If you do what you told and have no opinion about anything then you will be happy here.
    - If you enjoy working in an environment were you don't want to interact with anyone else within the organization then this is the place for you.

    Cons

    - The management are only an extension to the owner's requests and bring nothing of value to the table.
    - Bad work benefits that is getting worse every year.
    - promises given in the interview are never fulfilled.
    - Its a family business so don't expect to receive the special treatment they give themselves and to family friends.
    - They are not kids friendly especially if you are not a family member. This means that you can't bring your kids to work in a visit capacity and if you are a single mother you can not have your kids near since there is no kids nursery or anything close to that.
