This company completely feels like a family. I’ve never seen a company treat the interns as well as they do.

They don’t have a production company attached so we can just continue to work there afterwards. Haha but really, I wish I could have extended another six months.

It's no surprise most of the glowing reviews on here are from interns because honestly, they are treated really well at SideFX, because they are truly valued by all layers of management. It's not the same for employees, who are constantly left in the dark by upper management, not trusted to do their jobs by controlling managers, and often stuck filling the same role responsibilities for 5-10-15 years, as the company favors making external hires over promoting from within. It's also very siloed and political, with most staff favoring doing their own thing over collaboration, often feels like a kill or be killed environment, with staff looking out for themselves instead of each other. It's a very unhealthy environment it's sad to say.

An opportunity to be surrounded by experienced, talented individuals who know how to use they Houdini software. The ability to showcase your work to global industry clients and gain connections to opportunities that interest you. The flexibility to focus on what you are interested and being paired with an industry mentor that will help foster your growth.
Cons
The pay is barely sustainable but is better than nothing (what you normally receive from other larger studios).

Pros
You get to delve inside the newest build of Houdini all day and at your own pace learn as much as you want to. You have a lot of freedom to work on projects that you are interested to and everyone at Side Effects is great. Amazing people, a fast computer, and Houdini is just awesome. You learn A LOT at this internship

There wasn't any cons. It's really up to you on how much you want to get out of your internship. The resources are all there.

Pros
Amazing opportunity to dive into Houdini full time. When I worked there it was just before the release of Houdini 14. So got to work with a lot of new and interesting features. Great chance to collaborate with fellow interns. Houdini is so big, and so many ways to do things we never arrived at the solution the same way and learned a lot from each other.
Cons
None really. The internship is yours to do with what you want. Possibly run into frustrations if you aren't self motivated.

The best and fastest way to learn Houdini is to surround yourself with the people who made it. Beer on Fridays Everyone there is extremely friendly, company culture is great and easy to settle into The staff there cares about the success of the interns while they are there as well as when they leave and go off into the industry Jeff Wagner

Working and learning from accomplished industry veterans, interacting with R&D, friendly and helpful people at both locations. Great location in California.
Cons
Structure is a bit lose - work on whatever personal projects you feel like. Very helpful and always challenging to make your work better though.
