    Pros

While it does take time to build a clientele and start earning consistent commissions, it is nice to be given access to ALL products needed to have a successful hairstylist business. The fact that you are paid an hourly wage when you are building your business is a good safety net. Once I started getting repeat clients and stopped relying solely on walk-in traffic, I started to make commission on a regular basis.

    Cons

It is a struggle to keep up with all the "little" things at times. But the scorecards and goals really can help you see when you are doing well.

    Advice to Management

I think that facilitating a team environment is key for a good salon. Nobody likes working with people who don't want to work well with others.

I have been working at SmartStyle full-time

    Pros

It's a pretty laid back environment, and it would be great for new stylists just trying to get some extra experience.

    Cons

You're told that you'll make comission on what you do and that the least you'll earn is a base pay of $7.25, but you have to jump through a million hoops and have an insane clientele if you even want to hope to make commission. People very rairly tip more than $5, even for a full head of color and highlights. And it's a hassle to get any of your online logins once you just start the job.

    Advice to Management

Be more upfront about the pay, and don't flat out lie to newbies.

I have been working at SmartStyle part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Your co-workers become like a second family and you meet a lot of amazing people

    Cons

Upper management couldn't care less about their employees and treats their store managers and stylists terribly.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to your employees needs. Show that you're in this for them. Not just to make a buck.

I worked at SmartStyle (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good for beginner stylists to get an idea of salon enviornment

    Cons

Expected to put salon before family emergencies, or family in general. Poor pay. Customers aren’t always nice or understanding. Huge expectations for poor compensation. Expected to make commission, EXTREMELY difficult to do so.

    Advice to Management

Acknowledge family emergencies, help stylists make commission and not feel overwhelmed.
