I worked at TechShop full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I met some of the most talented and creative people while working at TechShop (members, staff and instructors). I honestly liked ALL of the members...even the ones that weren't always the friendliest or who were a bit high maintenance. We all have our querks right?

    Cons

CORPORATE, CORPORATE, CORPORATE...and some of the upper management. The lack of communication was the most frustrating. Bundle that with no raises, bonuses or incentives....not even a "Job well done." and moral will surely take a nose dive. We were under-staffed, under-paid and under-appreciated. Mid-Peninsula was known by staff and members as the "red-headed step-child". We did the best we could with what we had (at times we didn't even have paper towels or a working air compressor). We ran the shop for over a year without a GM (which is actually a Pro not a Con).
Everyone knew the day was coming when we'd show up for work only to find the doors locked. Although it wasn't a shock when it happened, it still saddens me. Such a great idea that came to fruition only to have it destroyed by those in charge.

    Advice to Management

You weren't willing to listen to the needs or advice of your staff or the members. Some of you would come into the shop and not even say hello, let alone know an employees name (who had worked there for 4 years).
My only advice, stick to tinkering in your garages and stop pretending to be business savvy entrepreneurs.

    Pros

    Advice to Management

stronger connection with your employee's issues would help the workspace environment.

I worked at TechShop full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Awesome concept
    Great community
    Had a lot of potential

    Cons

They grew too quickly and folded on top of themselves.
A lot of people at the top, like an inverted pyramid; everyone had ideas but no good way to implement anything practical or long-lasting.

    Advice to Management

    Hindsight is 20/20, right?

I worked at TechShop full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    • Fantastic and inspiring community of makers, creatives, and engineers
    • Wide variety of machines for use
    • Friendly and helpful staff and instructors
    • Wide variety of chances to network and make friends

    Cons

    • Poor communication (Confusion among staff and members)
Fix: Commit to a weekly or monthly publication for staff and a separate for members to keep the organization in the loop on what's going on (could also be used for promos, training)
    • Poor training of staff (increased machine downtime, stressed out new hires)
Fix: Every store should be sharing their tips, tricks, and fixes, Have SBUs designed with different advancement levels from member to staff to instructor which becomes more detailed about usage and/or maintenance
    • Low compensation for staff (high turnover)
Fix: Empower people to contribute, Make a transparent method of promotions and raises available to those who take more classes, teach, do projects and groom individuals to eventually become leads or instructors

    Advice to Management

Empower your staff, instructors, and members by listening to them, being transparent, and sharing information about what works and doesn't work. This community would have done everything to save this place and we were ignored.

I worked at TechShop full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The shops were great places, with fantastic and impressive members.

    Cons

No transparency. With the recent bankruptcy it is obvious that the corporate management is delusion at best, and mean-hearted in any case. Corporate did not have any business sense, and hundreds of people lost their jobs in one fell swoop when they realized all their bad decisions could no longer be hidden.

    Advice to Management

    Don't start another business.

    Pros

The new CEO truly cares for the employees and customers. This is a very unique service company with a mission to empower individuals and positively impact communities.

Limited current company growth means limited advancement opportunities. But the nature of the business provides amazing personal development opportunities.
