    mid-sized company that feels small.
Really starting to focus on development of associates and career.

    Cons

work/life balance could improve, but managers are understanding of personal needs.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the forward-thinking mentality and keep the associate development and career front and center.

I have been working at Topco Associates full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Strong investment of resources in both the people and technology to support our business objectives.

Still maintains a great "family" culture and treats employees as people first and foremost vs. numbers.

Tuition reimbursement program is an amazing benefit that most companies have axed...for those that take advantage it can make an unbelievable impact.

Senior leadership has excellent vision for future path and proactively making changes to remain relevant and more valuable. Member investment is a major endorsement of this positive path.

    Cons

Vestiges of silos still remain in some places and at times parts of the organization seem to be adversaries vs. part of the same team. This has improved but still an area that needs ongoing attention.

Clear path of advancement and development is also a work in progress that has caused many to be frustrated. Fostering more lateral and multi-dimensional career paths should help avoid more rising stars from being blocked by their existing role.

Opportunity for more flexible work from home options to improve an already strong work/life balance.

    Advice to Management

Stay the course on the overall vision. Demand that top performers have a path up and that low performers / blockers are addressed.

I have been working at Topco Associates full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with. Want to excel for the members. Great working conditions and above average benefits.

    Cons

Instituted Bonus Structure for Management in 2015 but need to extend it to all associates as soon as possible or increased turnover may occur.

    Advice to Management

Management realizes there are many silos within the business and have taken steps to break those down. However, there is much work to be done and one starting point would be to cross check all functional objectives across the business and have departments formally support those objectives.

I worked at Topco Associates full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Convenient office location, good benefits package. Support from coworkers created irrevocable bond. Marginally lower pay than industry was supplemented with strong benefits package. Was mentored by some very talented and knowledgeable individuals, but many have at least one foot out the door.

    Cons

Left because they expected too much from too few. Hard work ethic is not recognized through pay. Only way to move up is to change departments as openings become available, and most silos have their own process/procedures that do not fully align, limiting growth potential. Most veterans at the top are disappearing and new colleagues are not as focused on the "team-culture" as the old was.

    Advice to Management

Work towards creating a "Topco family" again, it worked! Promote from within and harness the knowledge that can only be gained from working up the ladder and working very closely with member / owners stimulate connections across members / category managers at the bottom. Stimulate and mentor those who are eager to grow with the company, and dump those who are dragging you down. Get rid of Topnotch and encourage/enable managers to present real bonuses for excellence. Don't allow cost of living awards for mediocrity. You have some excellent top performers - they don't all need to be showcased, just work on keeping them, you know what motivates them.

    Cons

no career path plan and poor communications between departments

I have been working at Topco Associates full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very competitive base salaries; regularly pay out at or near 100% on bonuses; trying to improve culture and reputation

    Cons

Low bonus % relative to comparable positions at other companies; higher benefit costs vs. similar roles at other companies; no vesting in 401k until 2 years of employment have been completed; business model makes it difficult to achieve goals, individudal cooperative members often make it difficult to do what's best for the entire cooperative

    Advice to Management

Work on cost of benefits and a more progressive workplace environment to attract and retain talent long term, especially young talent to sustain the company. Also be more realistic about the time needed to implement processes and strategies and do more thorough preparation; understand what it will truly take to get things right the first time vs. moving forward asap and causing a lot of unnecessary work to fix issues that could have been prevented.

I have been working at Topco Associates full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits and great lower level people

    Cons

Old boys club where women in upper management are merely tokens. Atmosphere in management is so polluted the last 2 Human Services Directors quit due to blatant sexism, and insular, arrogant upper managers. Project Everest is a spectacular failure which is being concealed from owners, (members). The company morale is in freefall with astronomical turnover. You have almost zero chance to come up to upper management thru the ranks, invariably, management comes in from the outside, former fraternity brothers and friends of management. Absolutely zero career development program.

    Advice to Management

My advice to the members is to come in, and fire everybody in upper management who is responsible for Everest and the sale of IT to Capgemini. What happened to the mentoring program?
