The small local swamp of friends

    Pros

Definitely this is a good place to start or finish your career.

    Cons

    1. No matter how well you work, this will never be appreciated. They may pick up your miserable bonus and not explain the reasons. 2. This is like a Titanic which only had three engines, this company has a very restricted number of clients. It's a fragile world based on magic and people. Unfortunately, they don't value people, they only value their friends. 3. This is a political place of friends where only political capital is valuable. Director #1 has some problems with director #2. Question: How to solve the issue? That's right! We only need to give one of the friends the position of director #3 and put him between #1 and #2. Bingo! Director #4 a little bit lazy to work (the friend of CEO as well?), and provide to the client ineffective and hard to support solutions. But, that's fine! Engineer #1 may work on project #12 many years and it will never be finished because of the absence of political capital, but Engineer #2 will get a promotion because he is a friend of director #1 4. This is a ship without the captain and without course. CEO where are you? Hey Vail!, Amazon is knocking in the door of your clients. Are you hearing that??? Sell your business before it's too late. Unfortunately, I just wasted my talent and time at this company.

    Insanely boring

    Pros

-Compensation was good, but benefits are terrible. Honestly, I was overpaid to do nothing. -Snacks, but the quality of snacks went downhill

    Cons

-Insurance is way too expensive! -The work isn't challenging. I sat at my desk all day and did nothing. -They refuse to upgrade to software and systems that would be better for their employees. They only use Jira/Confluence/Hipchat and it's inefficient and antiquated -19% female staff (which they say is par for the course for a tech company though all the other tech companies I've worked for were almost a 50/50 split between males and females) -Lack of diversity -Lack of communication among departments and lots of inefficiencies (It took 13 weeks for a systems operator to reset my password! All because he didn't know he was in charge of that and because he never checked Jira, which is where the request was submitted)

There are good days and bad.

    Pros

Vail Systems is a decent place for recent grads to gain experience and work with somewhat modern technologies. It's the BEST place if you're an older engineer that just wants to work 9 to 5. There is ample amounts of job safety for all. A single product's revenue sustains the company and allows the company to pursue a lot of R & D projects. Promotions are usually within the company.

    Cons

It's political here. Problems and issues are usually not solved logically and in good faith, but are eventually decided by the person with the most political capital. Because of this, a lot of mid-level managers can end up being helpless to their direct reports. Senior engineers are concentrated in Deerfield, so the younger engineers in the loop office don't get mentored, and end up leaving for greener pastures. There are a number of complacent engineers here and there, which can get frustrating if you're in the early years of your career. If you're asked to take on more responsibility, politely reject it because you will not be rewarded for your efforts regardless of verbal assurances.
