    I worked at Versalogic full-time

    Pros

Great company to work with. Very good assignments. They treat all employees the same with respect.

    Cons

For job searchers, this a hard company to find permanent employment. Versalogic is a small company. While there are openings to replace those who will leave, I do not see any growth that will lead to more opportunities.
For temporary contingent the emphasis is short term. Not much opportunity for long term or temp- to hire assignments. Versalogic is more like a revolving door. They will treat you well but the foot you got in the door will be on its way out in a few months.

    Pros

Good people, fun environment, lots of learning to be had when given the chance

    Cons

No room for growth, negative atmosphere a good portion of the time, underhanded and sneaky ways of doing things.

    Advice to Management

Don't take advantage of your employees because they tend to resent working for you.

I have been working at Versalogic full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Tremendous amount of dedicated, supportive, talented and caring staff/coworkers (though much talent was perhaps needlessly lost in several past 'incidents' and layoffs).

    Stellar product design and development.

    Industry leading engineering staff.

Interesting, varied and evolving customer applications.

    Long-standing customer and partner relationships.

Reasonable benefits (though inconsistent and below par salary offerings, with limited opportunity for increases or advancement over time).

    Cons

    Chronic micromanagement.

Upper- and middle-management lacking "people management" skills and training.

Often dismissive or downright abusive behaviour from CEO, and upper management, toward staff (and often toward the small mid-management team, which sometimes seems to pass it on as disrespectful treatment of their direct staff). As an aside, Len (CEO) can be a very charming, funny and nice person. It is when runs into confusion or dissenting ideas than things can take an ugly turn.

Stagnant business processes, "paralysis by analysis", and continual resource drain by reinventing of the wheel (e.g. "home-grown" software).

Hesitant to innovate beyond products, if not downright aggressively reluctant to do so (i.e. internal applications, databases, processes, documentation, training, employee development, etc.)

HR has actively worked against staff interests in legally (and ethically) ambiguous situations involving management actions. Perhaps not unique or unexpected, but still not helpful when seeking advice or support of HR.

Cynicism and negativity are rampant, very much an "us vs. them" environment. Management is often distrustful of staff and staff is often distrustful of management.

Change is rarely managed, or executed, well.

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff and customers, and act with integrity.

    Update business processes and applications.

Have CEO step back from day to day operations, as years of attempting to address the worsening micromanagement and abusive treatment of staff has proved unsuccessful. Stepping away may be the only way to salvage a productive and happy staff and the undoubtedly brilliant ideas of the CEO.

Trust your people and be trustworthy.

Get back to basics. Some things from the past worked better, while some new and simple changes may improve other issues. Stop trying to 'reinvent the wheel' just because the original inventor is no longer there.

I have been working at Versalogic full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, management team, and coworkers! Lots of opportunity for the business to grow into a success with some simple changes.

    Cons

Owners involvement. One sits on the sideline and doesn't offer any positive direction and the other actively abuses the employees, holds up progress by bottlenecking, and makes the entire organization look bad in several ways.

    Advice to Management

Get the owners out of the picture. Versa has a terrible reputation because of the hostile work environment and crappiest homegrown software money can't buy. This company is capable of great things but is held back by one individual who has a thirst for abusing the people who are responsible for his company's success.

    Pros

Nice , helpful people. Very knowledgeable and rise to the constant need to adapt / adjust to deal with endless stalled projects

    Cons

Inept management. Hesitant to invest in their own success, indifference to customer satisfaction, consistently inculpable behavior

    Advice to Management

Listen to the seasoned professionals you have hired. If people can do better elsewhere........ they will

    Pros

My co-workers are nice. I have some real friends here. I also like the quality and design of the products. It's nice to produce something you are proud.

    Cons

Leadership is the worst I ever experienced. There is micromanagement in conjunction with poor direction - a recipe for disaster. Also, fix the environment and infrastructure. Altogether, this paints a lack of respect for employees.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to manage people. You are driving off the talent that could make this company more successful than ever.

    Pros

Committed colleagues who genuinely want the organization to succeed. Good customer base. Reliable product.

    Cons

Mid-management; micro-management; low salaries, no 401k program. Feedback, innovative thinking and professional contributions are discouraged. Management's focus is on your ability to follow process; not on your knowledge/experience or your professional ability. This environment proved difficult to grow professionally.

    Advice to Management

Difficult to give advice to a management group that believes they already know everything there is to know.

    Pros

The employees there really care and want to produce quality work. Eugene is a wonderful place to live and work and VL is one of the few tech companies to work for. It's a small company but they do have good benefits.

    Cons

Micromanagement. Even if you are educated, smart, collaborative and feel confident in your abilities and skills you'll still be discounted because there is an attitude that nobody is competent. Projects stall out without empowerment to finish the job.

    Advice to Management

Hire bright people and pay them as much as you can. Trust your team to do the jobs you have hired them for.

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Eugene, OR

    Pros

Working at VersaLoigic you will definitely have a good work life balance. Moreover, the health and other non-financial benefits are quite good considering that it is a small private company. You will get chance to do a wide variety of work outside your typical job role. The people working there are very nice and helpful, probably some of the nicest people that you will come across.

    Cons

Not much opportunity to grow your career. You might get stuck in one position for a long long time. Although salaries are OK but other monetary benefits have been close to zero for past three to four years. Company has been facing a lot of competition from other low cost good quality international players which seems to be hurting company a lot. They have some good big customers that they can rely but what if they were to leave? It poses a serious revenue risk for the company.

    Advice to Management

Respect your employee and their feelings as they are working in the interest of the company. Come up with a solid strategy to grow and make the company profitable and stick with it which will hep in gaining trust and confidence of your people. There is so much potential to be tapped but one needs a good well thought out plan.

    Pros

Among the few high tech companies left in Eugene.

    Cons

Senior management can be extremely mean spirited at times. Always willing to blame and/or ridicule employees but rarely takes any responsibility for poor planning. Very little incentive to exceed expectations. This company has succeeded in the past, despite these shortcomings, through the perseverance of key employees, but many of them are now gone and if nothing is done to stem the tide, more will soon follow.

    Advice to Management

    It's all been said.
