I worked at Vision Express (Less than a year)

    Pros

As a younger person with no experience you will be sure get on well, to work as a post graduate whilst saving towards your career this would be ok

    Cons

Long hours, late finishes, no extra pay, late lunches

    Advice to Management

Learn some people skills and how to listen, follow through on training and don't ignore staff when they say they need extra training. Don't leave it to staff to struggle and then blame them.for errors

I worked at Vision Express full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great training programs for those who want to learn. Fantastic employee discount especially if you wear glasses. Nice uniform. Easy dispensing system.

    Cons

Above management level the company is rife with a blame culture, lack of support, understanding or appreciation for front line staff and management. The decision makers refuse to admit their mistakes and the consequences of their actions but instead shift blame onto the people that work hardest to make the business a success. They used to be a great company to work for but in their quest to compete with budget chains have devalued their image, public perception and the staff that work so hard for them. Some stores have cliques and if you don't fit in it can be difficult. No realistic bonus scheme or incentives anymore.

    Advice to Management

Value your staff and take responsibility for your decisions! If you want to make radical changes consult your staff they will give you valuable advice on how to implement them without alienating your customers and staff!

I worked at Vision Express full-time

    Pros

Out of the cold in winter decent enough wage

    Cons

The staff are like little lost smurfs,

    Advice to Management

Another high target job, selling glasses for hundreds pounds daily. Every member of staff have targets to make, now seriously who is going to spend that amount on some frames when you can munch on a good few Carrot's. Staff should pay attention to their customers they are the ones who keep ur butts in business. People Are stood waiting to be acknowledged on their arrival, doesn't help when your short staffed but its not like any of the staff are busy they mostly are having a bit of banter with some fairy cakes & a cup of tea. When really they could be focusing on the practicalities. Customers have come in the store angry cos they have been messed around & orders go missing. It really is unprofessional. Emotional outbursts, targets not met the threat of docking wages. Seems to me that vision express like playing musical chairs with their staff on that note the staff look like they all have haemmaroids & that they are gonna burst. Members of staff are not only not trained in their job but not toilet trained cos the male toilets one of the staff did a big poo & didn't flush it. Traumatised eyesight.

    Pros

The rest of the staff team are great, most of the customers are nice and friendly, and if you do your job properly you'll be fine.

    Cons

The management changes far too quickly, they just don't seem to be able to hold their staff, we've gone through more that 5 managers in less than a year. The customers are quick to blame when it's not your fault and the managers tend to leave the solving of problems to us. Then, if the problem isn't solved properly or to the customers satisfaction the manager will just give a full refund! I think they put too much expectation on the lower end staff and don't do enough themselves.

    Advice to Management

Get into gear! Treat your staff with respect, say if you're planning to leave, don't join the store if you know you'll be out within the next month or so. Take some responsibility with more than just answering emails and tidying up - complaints and problem solving are far more important and shouldn't be left to lower level, less experienced staff.

I have been working at Vision Express full-time

    Pros

100% Employee discount once per yr
If you can stand to work here in this miserable environment where most if not all employees hate to work in, then there is the chance of progression. Many employees rise from Optical Assts to Managers, Store Managers, Dispensing Opticians etc which the company provide funding and training for

    Cons

Store Manager was horrible and mutually disliked by employees, constantly defaming employees and being inconsiderate when certain situation require understanding.
Short break and long hrs, AWFUL pay
Generally angry customers with multiple complaints, more angry customers than satisfied.
Only care about sales, sales, sales! No consideration in the slightest on the healthcare front; somewhat understandable but we are told on first briefing 'not to book appointments for anyone we think will not buy.' Disgusting first impression.
Management are hard to approach; have seen same attitude in various stores
