Atrium Health Simulation Center achieved the goal of creating a career pipeline when the first graduate of the Carolinas College of Health Sciences simulation program became its employee. Katie Cushman, a simulation operation specialist, began her new job by leading a virtual workshop to introduce high school students to the many opportunities in health care simulation. This is exactly how Katie came to the program from her original plans for a bedside clinical in health care. “If you like computers, you could do my job or you can program the software for the manikin. Or, if you’re really good at building things, you can build the manikins in the workshop.” The highly-accredited simulation center serves to promote quality and patient safety, enhance education, and develop research through excellence in simulation-based training and assessment. This is the only program like it in the world where students can earn a bachelor’s degree and learn a curriculum that melds education, technology, research, assessment and administration. What is your “why”? For Atrium Health teammate, Brian Donado, it’s to improve health, elevate hope, and advance healing - #ForAll - which is also why he was drawn to Atrium Health. With a degree in health care management from Appalachian State University in 2019, Brian returned to Charlotte with the intention of working for Atrium Health. While COVID-19 was an unforeseen obstacle that delayed employment, Brian persevered and became a teammate in 2021. This required him driving from Charlotte to Cleveland hours before his shift and sleeping in his car to avoid rush hour traffic. Beginning as a part time registrar, Brian would later go on to become a preceptor as a patient financial specialist- training new teammates in patient access. Brian is now a community health worker, and he fights to eliminate social inequities in health care. He serves on Atrium Health’s Community Relations Committee and Hispanic Coalition Workgroup. Recently, Brian’s alma mater awarded him the Emerging Leader Award for his dedication to his community. When asked about future goals Brian shared, “I want to be able to go where I am needed. This is what I love to do- helping people live a better life and have better outcomes.” We are proud to work alongside teammates, like Brian, who embody Atrium Health’s mission. Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center was recently awarded recertification of The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. Only 15 hospitals in the U.S. currently hold this prestigious designation in spine surgery.
