Maya Angelou was an American author, actress, screenwriter, poet and civil rights activist whose memoir “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” was the first nonfiction best seller by an African American woman. Born into slavery, he taught himself to read and went on to teach fellow slaves to read the Bible. He penned three autobiographies, the most famous of which is the “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas.” He also published the North Star newspaper for 10 years and gave countless speeches across the US and Britain.
