I was born in Trinidad and Tobago, but moved to Canada at an early age. Growing up, I was inspired by the words of my grandfather—he always told me to take all the opportunities that Canada presents to help me reach my full potential. Early on I knew that I wanted to help others. After some transformative volunteer experiences and my studies in international development, I knew setting up a social enterprise here in Canada was my path. At Empowered 4x we provide a co-working space, business training and consulting to help marginalized youth and black entrepreneurs find opportunities and build businesses. The journey to where we are today has been challenging but also incredibly rewarding. Chancie, my advisor at CIBC, has been invaluable in providing support as Empowered 4x continues to grow. Growing up, I always wanted to fly. I dreamed of being a pilot in the Air Force, but women weren't allowed back then. That changed while I was in my final year of university, and I immediately signed up. Following rigorous testing, I was one of nine candidates from across India selected for the first batch of women helicopter pilots. There were plenty of challenges early on, but I focused on letting my actions speak for me and I soon gained the trust of my colleagues. My role took me to remote regions, where I saw the impact my presence had on local girls, showing them that they could go after any career they wanted.
