David Marshall has fond memories of growing up on his family’s farm and forestland. “My grandfather planted an 18-acre apple orchard, as well as a pine forest in the back of his property,” says Marshall. “I spent a lot of time there impressed that the trees had been planted by the hands of my own grandfather. It grew into this beautiful place. I’ve been an outdoors guy my whole life, and here I am, years later, still reflecting on the power of nature and the impact we have.” That early connection to the land as well as time spent planting trees while in college led Marshall to a career in sustainability, first in urban planning and then, beginning in 2017, for the forest products industry with Resolute Forest Products, now part of Domtar. Today, Marshall serves as Domtar’s vice president of Sustainability Governance & Reporting, a position that builds on his decades of local, national and international experience in corporate sustainability; environmental, social and governance (ESG) risk management; community and sustainability development; public affairs; government relations; and corporate and non-profit governance.
Domtar once again partnered with Office Depot and OfficeMax stores to support education by providing back-to-school essentials to Title I schools across the country. This year’s effort was part of Start Proud!®, Office Depot’s signature back-to-school community investment program that supports teachers in K-12 public schools located in high-need districts. Donations like ours help empower educators to create vibrant learning environments for their students while alleviating their out-of-pocket expenses. Our contribution helped surprise teachers with shopping sprees for classroom supplies to help local students start the year off right. Community investment programs like Start Proud! also help ease the financial impact on parents who are preparing their children for a new school year.
Domtar launched its 2030 Sustainability Strategy in May 2025, and a great deal of work is now underway across our business units. We’re building on that framework to ensure we reach our 2026 targets and are working toward the targets we committed to achieving by 2030, including a roadmap that will ensure systematic follow up on the progress of the Strategy’s three pillars. This Q3 2025 Sustainability Strategy update and quarterly updates going forward will break down our progress by pillar.

It’s Forest Week, a time to celebrate the people who dedicate their careers to caring for our forests and to reflect on the vital role forests play in our environment, our economy and our daily lives. Forests sustain biodiversity, provide renewable resources and support thousands of jobs — including those of our own foresters and forest engineers. At Domtar, our forest engineers are at the heart of sustainable forest management. From planning responsible harvests to protecting wildlife habitats, they help ensure our forests remain healthy and productive for generations to come. We sat down with members of our forestry team for a behind-the-scenes Q&A for Forest Week. They shared what a day in the woods is really like. They also shared the challenges and rewards of their work, and what fuels their passion for forestry.
