This Earth Day, we’re proud to launch Domtar Connects — a companywide framework that brings together contributions and employee-led community service to strengthen the places where we live and work. Inspired by the legacy of the EarthChoice Ambassador (ECA) Program and countless employee-led grassroots initiatives, Domtar Connects is designed to engage employees, align with our corporate values and maximize our impact. The program complements owner Jackson Wijaya’s commitment to philanthropy.
At Domtar, we are committed to investing locally to support those in the greatest need, and recently, our community investments funded inclusive and accessible activities through the Allegro Foundation and Miracle Park. Our investments in the Charlotte, North Carolina, region have the ability to benefit more than 1.5 million residents—including the families and friends of our teammates—who live in York County (South Carolina) and Mecklenburg County (North Carolina). We operate three facilities in the area: our U.S. corporate office in Fort Mill, a converting center in Rock Hill and a distribution center in Charlotte.
Classroom learning is essential, but for advanced manufacturing students who considering a career in modern manufacturing, nothing beats a site visit. Recently, students enrolled in the Grenada School District Advanced Manufacturing program had the opportunity to tour our paper mill in Grenada, Mississippi. The program, which is operated in partnership with Holmes Community College, organized the visit as a way to give students valuable insight into industrial manufacturing, including safety, operations and career opportunities in one of the region’s most advanced facilities.
Our Windsor Mill recently earned its ISO 50001 certification. The international ISO 50001 standard recognizes organizations for improving energy use through the development of an energy management system (EnMS). The new Windsor Mill certification is part of our ongoing commitment to lower our environmental footprint, and it highlights the mill’s environmental performance, which is among the best for mills in North America.
Earlier this month, representatives of the North American forest products industry met at PaperWeek Canada to share insights and expertise on issues that the industry will face in 2025. The conference, held February 10-13, 2025, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and online, is the Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada’s flagship conference. The annual event has evolved over the years to include a dedicated segment, known as BIOFOR, that is focused on the industry’s biorefinery and bioeconomy innovations. This year, the PaperWeek 2025 and BIOFOR agendas featured a strong Domtar presence. We participated in seven sessions, highlighting our innovation and leadership in the industry.
Domtar is joining forces with Boisaco and the Centre de recherche sur la boréalie (CREB) of the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC) to support leading-edge research projects that will address the challenge of managing Quebec’s forests sustainably. The research partnership will allocate $430,000 annually over five years, totaling $2.15 million, with Domtar, owned by investor Jackson Wijaya, providing $350,000. UQAC’s research projects focus on a number of critical themes, such as climate change adaptation, biodiversity, carbon management and forest ecosystem regeneration. These initiatives aim to advance Quebec’s scientific knowledge and improve sustainable forest management practices. Since 2016, CREB has brought together 25 research professors from UQAC to address issues related to renewable resources in the boreal environment. Their extensive expertise spans forest development and dynamics, green chemistry and valorization of forest bioproducts, carbon and forest-soil management, the ecology of terrestrial wildlife and aquatic ecosystems in boreal environments, sustainable development and climate change mitigation, as well as biodiversity, northern agriculture, remote sensing and hydrogeomorphology.
Over the years, Domtar’s political advocacy efforts have helped lawmakers, consumers and others better understand the role our industry plays in everyday life, and the effects that legislation and regulation can have on the way we source, manufacture, sell, use and reuse forest products. To learn more about these political advocacy efforts and the issues our industry is facing in 2025, we spoke with Seth Kursman, Domtar’s vice president of U.S. Public Affairs. He’s part of a larger Domtar Public Affairs team that is charged with representing our interests to the public and to assorted industry organizations, government bodies and a range of other stakeholders in the United States.
