You see us refer to the Epic “community” a lot. Organizations like Advocate Health Care are the reason why. This month, King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust went live on Epic, marking the largest single go-live anywhere in the world. As a large, experienced user of Epic, Advocate saw an opportunity to lend a hand to their new peers. More than 100 Advocate teammates made the trip across the pond. “We’re proud to share our team’s expertise because we know firsthand how helpful it can be to have an experienced mentor when implementing and learning a new technology system,” said Advocate Health Chief Information Officer Bobbie Byrne. “We may be separated by an ocean, but our London counterparts share our commitment to using technology to help provide patients with the highest-quality care possible.”
Our new friends at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust have gone live on Epic, marking the largest single go-live anywhere in the world. Roughly 51,000 users are going live—enough people to fill 123 British Airways jumbo jets. From Professor Clive Kay, Chief Executive at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust: “This is a real game-changer for staff and patients across both Trusts, and I am delighted that we are introducing a truly transformative electronic patient record across both organisations. Our staff deliver first-rate patient care every day, and with Epic, it won’t matter which hospital or community setting patients are treated in – staff will be able to access their information at the touch of a button. I am pleased that we now have a system in place that will make their working lives easier, and empower them to innovate for the benefit of patients.” Congrats, everyone!
To make childcare an easier option for patients, healthcare workers, and first responders, our friends at Parkland Health collaborate with Annie's Place to offer onsite childcare at no cost. When patients miss appointments, Parkland sends a survey through MyChart to better understand why. If childcare was a factor, Parkland automatically points them to Annie’s Place. Similar messages appear in After Visit Summaries for parents who aren’t yet enrolled in the program. Parkland and Annie’s Place then use Epic to facilitate referrals and facilitate communication between healthcare providers, the childcare center, and parents. In 2.5 years, the program has cared for more than 3,000 children and currently has more than 500 families enrolled. Congrats, folks!
In response to the nursing shortage facing healthcare providers across the country, our friends at Guthrie shifted to a virtual, team-based approach to nursing that extends the reach of their bedside nurses and creates a culture of collaboration. At the core of this approach is a virtual command center, which gives bedside nurses round-the-clock support from experienced colleagues. In addition to helping them meet the needs of patients, nurses, and providers, Guthrie estimates that virtual nursing saves them more than $7 million per year. Congrats, folks!
Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, joined us on stage at UGM 2023 to discuss the future of AI in healthcare, including our collaborative work in generative AI and ambient voice. We hope you enjoyed your time in Verona, Satya!
Last month, Bradford "Ford" Koles, Jr. from Advisory Board popped by to chat with our staff about the state of the healthcare industry. We covered a lot—the challenges that health systems face today, the cases for optimism, the trends to watch. Ford is the latest speaker in a series of all-Epic talks that we host throughout the year to help staff better understand Why We Do What We Do. Thanks for coming, Ford! We hope you enjoyed your voyage into Deep Space.
If you visit Epic, you’ll see a little sign that reads "Epic Intergalactic Headquarters" as you pull in. Why “intergalactic?” Well, as Judy puts it, “World Headquarters” seemed way too ostentatious. We liked the humor in “Intergalactic.” Plus, it’s a good test for a sense of humor. If the “Intergalactic Headquarters” sign at our entrance rubs you the wrong way, you should probably turn around 😊
Happy early Earth Day, everyone. Here’s to taking in the colors around us this (and every) weekend 😊
This fall, nursing students at Boise State University will have a new classmate 😊 Through a partnership with St. Luke's Health System, the Boise State nursing program is bringing a sandbox version of Epic—which includes no real patient data—to the school’s Simulation Center, giving students plenty of experience with the software that they’ll use in real-world clinical scenarios. We love to hear about super users in the making! See you in class.
Earth without art is just eh. Healthcare IT without art is… Helhcae IT? Healthce I? Doesn’t quite work, but you get the joke. Wherever you are—hospital, home, or high-rise—we hope you’ve got some art nearby that makes you smile 😊
